well I am sorry to say the first pour didn't go to good....I thought it was but then the lead started leaking in between the pipe and cone, and all over the vise and floor...I thought I had it pinched together good ....will have to figure something out to hold the pieces together
and try again....maybe I preheated things to much???
the second attempt to pour the lead worked and poured full, but trying to remove the pipe didn't....I had to drive it off which split the lead in to 2 pieces ....had a hard time getting the stainless out of the stuck lead in the pipe.....had to split the pipe the length of it to get the lead out of the pipe that was needed anyway for the next pour...just will clamp it together to poured and take the clamps off to remove the pipe....I'll get it done right if it kills me :yippee:....I enjoy a good challenge .......Thanks John for helping with that :headbang:
put it on my 4lb postal scale and it topped it out....individually weighs in at 2lb 13oz (gaff) separate lead 1lb 6oz....
total should be around 4lb - 3oz...real close John....still need to put the pencil points on..... so will get slightly lighter :yay:

PW brought it in the other day,I'll have Tom post it next week,or maybe Fin could stop by and take a pic.I've been going can till can't the last three weeks moving in to the new 5800sqft warehouse, resetting the sales floor, tripling our work area, and past couple days I've been busting out 10 layers of firewall between the old stock room and the sales floor to increase our retail area by 2832 sqft. That now puts us a little over 23,000.Who'da thunk a teen age kid who grew up on GSP,hated school, but could build the hell out of a fishing pole would be the owner of what is now one of the largest saltwater stores in the country. Thanks to ALL of you for helping live my dream, once again, thanks!!

This is what customer service will do for a business and good products!!!!! Congrat's on the expansion and look forward to seeing it, when in town....J&M was always my go to store when in the area.

PM sent - no worries
got the rope eye put on the test gaff....not quite the same as pictured....not the real tear drop rope eye??....I can try different on the next one, and the length has got a little longer by this ....the rope is a 5/8 and fits good and hangs true(centered on the shaft)....just running it by the ones that wanted a gaff....I will try and do the tear drop better on the next ones(if that is truly preferred), but doing it by hand and bending the main shaft, I kind of get what I get....
I can do a separate piece and just weld that on the shaft too(most likely be easier)....and can play more for the tear drop....just getting opinions to who wants them already....thanks and input is appreciated :3some: :yippee:

Great job Bill,I owe ya one.
That rope ring looks fine to me, whatever is easiest and requires the least amount of trouble.
Thanks for the kind words!!!
cold up here....but warming wed. so hopefully get the next 4 welded in the garage and poured by the end of the week....doing my best with these, and might try for a little longer bigger tear drop.....it was fun bending that tight, around the 5/8 stainless rod....still need one for me :poke1:...
a bad bend start, cost me that one....first thing in the morning after changing a measurement the day before and starting without changing the other measurement on the board (my cheat sheet) by that 1 in....
oh well....will get more stainless rod..... maybe more will want some come king season..... gets going good.

NO John..... I really owe you one....without the dimensions and well picture, that someone else posted....It could have never happened, although it does resemble a store bought gaff I already own....with regular BIG hooks and barbs, and the lead for weight....
But THANK YOU so much for the help and kind words from ALL
Turned out nicer then I thought....so hit the garage for a little welding, ran out of daylight so the last will get done tomorrow....may pour some lead tonight ....who knows
decided to make a jig to hold the prongs and to clamp easier...a few pictures....moving right along considering.

well got a little more stainless rod..... :yippee:.....maybe I should move this or start a new one in the classified section..... :poke1:
did a little different on the tear drop eye, easier and I think better....more like the original picture....it is what it is
the 5 are almost done....tig weld the rope eye closed and grind the pencil points on....ready for the rope....and the fish :yippee:

Can't wait to get mine and properly blood it.
I can't tell from the pics, but make sure the eye is welded and smooth so the anglers line doesn't get caught inside or cut.

John,
That is the next thing for sure....way to windy yesterday to use the tig and the gas shield....they will be pulled tight and tig welded smooth....I had stick welded the prong's to the main shaft but will tig weld the eyes.... and the pencil points for the last .....then done....ready for a rope and fish
just so you know and can see in the pictures(that's why I am posting them)
the rope eyes aren't perfect in anyway, and different from one another(slightly except for the first one)....did the best I could....and will try to do better in the future.....but they should hold a rope and gaff fish.....so look at the pictures good and decide if you still want one
as I am handling and working with them......I am liking them better all the time, and now have enough material to make one for me too :yay:

Good looking gaff. I noticed that you've waited to grind the point until all of the other fabrication is complete. That would be the way I'd do it too if I were opting for a beveled point. However with a pencil point I think it will wind up being time consuming and difficult to get a nice uniform point. You might consider grinding the basic form of the point before bending the tines for any future builds. I say basic form, so to leave a small flat end for safety reasons during the bending and fabricating. Another option would be to go ahead and sharpen the point to it's finished state and tack weld a length of pipe or tubing over the point to shield the point from damage during fab and more important shielding you from the point.
Thanks for your concern & input, .... safety is 1 reason, plus I use vise grips on the end during the hook bending process....and I feel confident that I will be able to put good enough points on them to stick fish....if I had a lath to turn the point on, then it would be done first....but doing it by hand, sharp is all I am looking for....thanks for you input :headbang:
and maybe I will do it different in the future, .....still learning and figuring things out.... as I go :yay:...I am a googan
Ironman, shot me a PM with a phone number and a good time to call you. I'm a former weldor/fabricator that may have forgotten a lot, but I still have a few more ideas that maybe useful to help streamline your process.
Ironman, these are absolutely amazing!
If you decide to make more, I would love to make a purchase as well.
Both of my gaffs were stolen in November, so I am in need.
Make sure to engrave serial and model numbers on these. If you start a trend with this product, you could be the bearer of a future residual brand. Teach someone the technique, and sit back and enjoy the gains!
Or, just do it for fun, and everyone is still just as happy. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:  :yippee:
Ironman i would love to buy one of your gaffs. They look great. John G knows me if possible can leave with John will do payment anyway you want.

I am going to start a new post in the for sale section....the ones pictured are spoken for already, I have 3 more almost done and will be today,
as I have been making these and welding, seeing the stainless welding rod I already had and soon grinding the pencil points on, flapper wheel getting smaller....... I have realized, I am going to need to start to replace items that I already had....and did not account for that in the original price quoted, that was basically for my labor to make them....so there will be a price increase to accommodate for the replacement of items to build the gaffs....I have tried to keep the price low....something that I would be willing to pay myself, but NOT wanting to take away from my labor to buy more material to make them .....
so from here on out and doesn't affect the first 3 guys....the gaffs are priced at 65.00.....sorry..... but....making and selling is all new to me....and still priced at a fair price ......I think
so maybe we should lock this thread
That's a great price, brother!
I will look for the new thread once you're geared up to move on these great gaffs.
it's up....... and I am moving, working on 3 more......need to get the pencil points on them.....soon......thanks for the nice comments
And the real Thanks should go to John g ......for getting it started.!!!! :headbang:
