Instant rod holder
Old boyscout marine improvised tip.
Carve yaself a little diagonal notch in the handrail plank and yo'r pole wont be all slidin around. Saves on zip ties.

WOW! How come nobody has ever thought of this before?

Oh thats right, there are already million notches in the pier railing.
Thanks, guess the secret to these is outta the bag now.Ragnar Benson:

Or you could always hold it....
I personally wouldn't want someone walking on to my pier cutting notches.

Those notches are really nice when you are bent over the rail trying to help net or gaff a fish and you get skewered by a big old splinter where someone notched the rail without consideration for fellow anglers. Not to mention vandalism to state property.

Another tip: Carry a knife or clippers, in case you need to accidentally cut zip-ties.

Those notches are how I mark my personal spots on the rail, so when I tell you to move I can prove that you're in my place.

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for an abundant fishery and a magnificent pier, from which to access that fishery. I'm thankful for the morning view of the sunrise and what a spectacular view it is...
Happy Thanksgiving!
