Interesting idea to get a rod off the deck. Might want a (velcro?) safety strap to keep someone from bumping the butt and letting the rod take a high dive since the center of gravity is past the rail. At some piers/bridges, I'd clamp it to my cart and have the cart near the rail. St. Joseph Michigan jetty, with no rail, or Indian River Inlet, DE, come to mind for that.
With a rod clamped in the middle and driven into the ground/sand, it would also be a nice bank stick for catfish and such. Heck, even a boat, with a non-marring clamp. A very versatile idea.

I am sure you measured the rail, but there is only a 1.5 to 2 inch lip on the inboard side of the rail cap.

They are 2" square. I guessed the rail to be a standard 2x8 that would make it an 1 3/4 I think.
Best pic I have seen of the inboard. Thanks.Last edited by Bobbybacklash; 11-01-2014 at 07:01 PM.

I would hate to be fighting a fish down the rail and run into that....only being able to fish 1 rod on the pier, I like holding mine for the bite and hook set

It does not look like the design will work for a spinning rod and reel?
