I've decided to try to improve my pier cart (cheapo wheeled cooler that I modified by adding rod holders and a long handle) and I'm wondering if anyone has tried using oversized lawnmower wheels for such an application? I found some for the right price (Free) on a mower destined for scrap....
I can't say that I've tried it, but I can't imagine that hitting every crack between deckboards all the way down that pier would be particularly pleasant with rigid wheels.
I'd pick up some cheapo pneumatics from Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply and make an axle out of round bar stock. Harbor Freight has 10 inch pneumatics for $5.99.
I can understand free, but sometimes you get what you pay for. There's also the issue of what your time is worth, versus a less than optimal outcome.
Try it......not that i would.....but I like experimenting with new ideas ......it might just work.....one suggestion.....don't distroy the cooler so you can't put the old back on

lol at Finchaser. The wheels that came on the cooler are just hard plastic. The oversized mower wheels have rubber tread and are 3 times the diameter, so I'm thinking the bump factor should be reduced at least somewhat. The original wheels don't keep the cooler high enough. On steep grades or big bumps the back end of the cooler will drag. So I'm hoping that this will be an easy solution. Taking the cooler out on the pier with the original hard plastic wheels wasn't bad though. I hardly noticed the cracks and bumps, though my 6 foot handle extension probably has something to do with that.
I think its pretty darn good idea. And cheap too.
Wish I could change the wheels on my hand truck to a larger diameter/softer tire, might look into that...
