Repairing rod tip help
The tip on my ultralight rod has been loose for a while. I finally got the nerve to pull it off(which it came off easily. None of the wrapping below it is messed up or anything, so basically I just need to glue it back on. My question is what would work best to glue it back on with. Super glue, epoxy, or something else? Would be great if I would be able to get it from Walmart and go ahead and get it done.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
[font=comic sans ms][size=12pt]Most sporting goods stores/departments carry rod tip repair kits. It contains a glue stick that you heat with a lighter.
WallyWorld should have it.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
I have seen those before, just figured there might be soemthing better.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
thats what I use on my rods.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
You do not waent to epoxy it on!
Use rodtip, carpet glue or other beatable glue stik.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
I've been using Flexcoat tiptop glue on lighter rods since it first came out 20 or so years ago and it is the best because it is high temp.Beware of the white glue sticks found in some off the shelf kits because they are the same low temp sticks you find in craft stores to be used in glue guns.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
John, where can I find that Flexcoat at?
-
Re: Repairing rod tip help
unless you just want to keep some handy for later use. john will usually stick one back on for a couple bucks. cheaper than buying the glue just to lose it before you ever need it again chef.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
Yeah. I'm probably just going to do that. Was wanting to do it at home in case I wanted to use it before I got over to J&M again, but I am probably going to be stopping by there again next week, so I am going to have it done then.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
I have used these before for finishing a guide a two.

... just mix a few CCs of each.
Has to be stored it in a controlled environment though after opening.
Thanks for clearing that up John.
I was thinking in terms of the 5 minute epoxies :-[

What part of the world are you in Chef? I'm in Fairhope and would be willing to donate a little tip top glue to you.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
Don't use super glue Justin. You'll have to cut the rod if the tip needs replacing again.I may be just a store clerk but I know the correct way to put on a rod tip.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
I don't glue tips back on often, but when I do, I prefer something recommended by someone who does.

k, just flexcoat then? only been building rods for a couple years so, i havent really tryed to remove a whole lot of rod tips, but the 3 that i have with super glued (i burn them off) have fryed the rod tip, and i might have to take OPP up on his offer, i love all the good advice i can get, especially from the guys that have been doing it a while, might ask you to John some questions, i only know a few GOOD rodbuilders, John G, Cathy, Mike Ross, dont think i've met OPP, probably will this summer though, and a couple others that i don't know their names.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
No man,not the wrapping finish but the hard amber stuff that comes in a four inch stick and you have to heat it with a propane torch. It's the same stuff I used 23 years when I taught Kathy to build rods, then Mike Ross and so on.But I will say this, the purple Webber stuff that Ross Hutchinson got me started on when I was a 14 year old know it all was the best glue.

Re: Repairing rod tip help
Thanks again John.
He fixed my tip personally Thursday morning for me and gave me a quick lesson on it after he did it as well. That is the reason I still go out of my way to go to J&M. John truely cares about his trade and business. Even though I live in Pensacola now, I will still go to J&M for supplies and help. I know I can always rely on John and his staff.
