what is your favorite for the beach and sand?? pvc only, pvc and metal? or maybe all metal ?? thinking of making 2 for the trip, although I really don't care for fishing the beach and sand, especially if people are around in the water.....the sand on everything is a real pain in the rear for me
2" PVC only.
I like an 7 foot piece, cut diagonally into two 3 3/4 foot sections.
+1 on keeping reels out of the sand.
It kills more reels than anything else.
that is why I prefer the pier, plus the people around are other fisher's and not swimmers .....I already have somewhere pvc cut for this, but thought of using aluminum angle along with the pvc ....the angle more for the sand spike and the pvc for the rod holder ....I have seen this type before and seems easy to use and get in the sand deeper (with a added piece for your foot to stand on adding body weight)Quote:

2" pvc for me. I use a 5ft long section with a mitter cut at the bottom. Dont forget the rubber mallet to knock them in.
what about something like this?? maybe with pvc for the actual rod holder, clamped on the angle (like I don't have enough to do already)

2" PVC is needed for the handle on my largest surf rod. 5 feet long is a good length for me too. I use some made with 1.5" PVC for smaller rods if fished that day. All holders have a steep angle cut on one end made with a large chop saw (Be careful).Quote:

Bill, I have two aluminium angle and pvc sand spikes that I have been using for close to 16 years and have had no trouble .Of course I don't lay them in the road and run back and forth to see if they will break !!!!
I forgot to put the tail gate up one night and lost both of my pvc ones. started back tracking and found both of them in the road. they had been run over quite abit. Other than the road rash and tire marks there was no damage still using them to this day. I use them from the sand at the beach to the mud in the lake for catfish best 5 bucks I've spent.
well that video was just for the style, I can guarantee mine sure will take a run over, I already have some aluminum angle and pvc pipe, just thought of joining the 2 ....I can see the angle with a ledge(angle at sand height once in)) to stand on easier to get in the sand ....if I have time I will play with it, really won't take too long to make

i have that problem some of the time Psycho!! haha I just dont want to go move some of the crap around to get to what i need to make something so i go buy it but sometimes it seems i can buy stuff for what i would spend in materials... except the bumper i built for my jeep i came out way ahead on that one!
I like making and using what I make, there is something to say about the pleasure I get from and seeing others enjoy the same (like pier gaffs for 1) :D

I use the 2" PVC with 1/2 aluminum angle attached. Works great to push into sand. Had them for 10+ years and no problems. Easy to male and slide together for transporting.
that's what I had in mind, aluminum angle for the sand and clamped on PVC pipe for the rod, still make it plenty long enough but 2 piece for ease of transport.....working on a rod tying frame now for a needed guide replacement and flex coating after the repair(thanks John G for the lessons)....these rods will be for the beach ,if I fished there.....maybe on the pier to balloon float a bait out(not much for conventional casting reels)Quote:

FYI, I made my own sand spikes from PVC several years ago, but ended up buying 2 pre-made ones from Walmart the next year after forgetting mine. I was very surprised to discover how much lighter the store-bought spikes were. They are made of thinner plastic, which would be bad for plumbing, but it's good for stuff you are toting around.
another tip - if you can find an old backpack with drink holders and side-tension straps, I have found that those will accommodate a sand spike in each drink holder. The tension/compression straps help hold them in place, and of course your tackle goes in the pack itself. This totally frees your hands to manage the rods. I also use the pack to carry a bait net with a telescopic handle that does a passable job of catching sand fleas.
how far in the sand do you get the angle for the metal rod holder's?? ... needing to know where to put the foot angle to help sink it in the sand (not to high and not to low)

4 1/2' length of 1 1/4" pipe straight cut. Go down where the sand is damp and push in. Not kidding...suck on the end getting suction and the PVC slides right down where you need it. Learned this trick on the dense sands of Texas. Note. If there's a lot of shell it won't work as well.
