Re: Van staal question
Tom Testa at Reel Colors did five in blue for us so it would match the rest of a customers reels and the price was around $175 plus shipping back and forth and another $125 for disamble and resamble.

Re: Van staal question
It could be reanodized to almost any color you like and more than likely powder coated. Either way to do the job, not only well but correctly, the reel would need to be taken apart. I recall hearing that it isn't recommended or impossible to take one down without special tools. I had also heard rumor of VS making those tools available to the public. I don't know the actual truth concerning taking a VS apart, but I have heard of exactly zero people here or on any of the Florida piers who've accomplished the feat. That's not to say that is an impossible task but can safely say it isn't easy.
If I got a gold VS at the right price (I'm not a big fan of the gold ones either), I'd either learn to like the color by appreciating the deal I got or I would flip the reel for a profit to get another reel or trade it for what I wanted. It might be cheaper to flip or trade for what you want. It would definitely be cheaper to grow accustomed to it.

Re: Van staal question
Yeah ugly reels do catch fish, but don't look at it that way. Look at it as a commemorative color. Gold, for all the coin you saved. Hope you get great service out of it and catch tons of fish on it.

Re: Van staal question
Gold was regularly cheaper than other colors on the big auction site when I shopped around for one. And yet the Penn Internationals in gold are not a problem for the boat folks. In the early days, the black version VS was for the north, and the gold version was the southern version, supposedly to allow for the weather making a black reel too hot in the summer. Taste and regional preference in tackle is a funny thing.
I am always amazed at the reels people buy in candy-apple red, purple, green or pink to name a few.

Re: Van staal question
When I posted this I had only seen pics , but the reel is almost silver . It's gold but real light color . Think I like it.
