Is it cold down there?..... Looks a little chilly:D
Ffffuuuuuddddgeeeeeee! ( only I didn't say fudge) yes!! Frost on the roofs in my neighborhood, brisk north wind. I thought I told you to shut the door when you got home........
Cept they will freeze!
Cold early but warmed up nicely and winds mild. Turned into a beautiful day.
Backed out of the driveway this morning and heard a big clunk. Didn't pay much attention to it till I got on the interstate and big 1/2 inch sheets of ice started blowing out the back.
This chilly weather is invigorating. Big man weather. I went to the hunting camp to take care of a few chores and the cool made me feel young---felt like I was seventy again.
My first sit

The past couple of days have been real kudzu killers down here, but we still have several more days before we can start shooting for venison.
Bow hunting here.... gun comes in for a week the first of December
Me, I'm no good with the stick and string. Use things that go BOOM.
Our bow season goes from September 28 till first part of February , gun is just a week plus bonus weekend , then 4 day muzzle loader first part of January, why I started the bow thing and owning my own land being able to do what I want within the law:D gets me deer for jerky especially having new eyes to see good
Crossbow is easy once sighted in, just got to be closer then long range..... no long shots in my woods , but longer then the bow, why I have a bow feeder , 18yards.... and 2 tube feeders for gun 60 & 80 yard shots:)
In Alabama they allow 10 does,...just two bucks, with one having to have four or better on at least one side.
Ten does?,...ya think there are a LOT of deer down here?
There is hardly a day goes by where I don’t see one, either on the side of the road, or in the road, or both.
If you limit out (which would be WAY too much cleaning deer guts for me haha) and you take advantage of all the “special” hunts and areas the State has designated, I can’t imagine just how many deer you could harvest here.
I take two and that serves the fam just right. Usually we’re using the last pound of ground right when the season starts again.
One odd thing about the herd here is that the deer were reintroduced here in the 1940’s after unregulated meat and market hunting wiped them out completely. They came from Minnesota and Michigan. So our deer go into rut in January (!) I’ve hunted in both Maryland and North georgia and the ideal time was third week of November.
I think the late rut is because the deer evolved in the extreme cold of those climates. So if the deer rutted in November then the fawns would be born with snow on the ground and zero new browse. I’ve seen does with really small fawns just today.
Just don’t get me started about the non indigenous coyotes....
Actually, the timing of the rut has to do with the length of day/amount of daylight that the deer receive rather than the temperature. Horses are the same. One of the farms i worked on used artificial lights to bring mares into heat in February and March so that they would foal in January since racehorse foals are aged as of january 1 on the year of thier birth. Northern deer may have evolved to be ready to gestate during different amounts of daylight than southern deer. Its all on the females though. A buck will breed a doe any time she comes into heat, rut or not, regardless of antler development.
And... In Michigan the rut starts in November. Some does breed in October, most in November, and those that didnt get bred or didn't catch (or young of the year doe fawns) will come into heat in December. Ive been witness to it and have hunted the Michigan rut for 30 years.
