Culinary and geographical conundrum...

I don't mean to pick on them at all and I understand it's a price point deal but how on earth did we get to a place where we import shrimp that is basically raised in an antibiotic infused cesspool and sell it on the shore of a body of water that produces some of the best shrimp to be found?

It seems absurd that a state run facility that should be promoting locally grown or produced goods could let it happen. I saw this yesterday and decided to just ignore it but couldn't. If nothing else there should be signage in any food service place displaying country of origin. Sorry, my rant for the month-but no human should eat the seafood from indo china, India or Pakistan. If consumers had any idea how it is handled they would agree.

And don't even think about getting frog legs from those place. Frogs eat flies, and what is it that attracts flies? Right.

Just for the purpose of freshness and quality - THAT should be the standard of any local seafood place. Why go to the beach for seafood that you can get anywhere in the USA?

David, your point is well-made about a STATE facility not featuring local seafood. That's an oversight that should be remedied immediately. But it probably won't be. The shame is that we have to ASK if the seafood is local or not.

Frogs or any amphibian are especially off limits because of the permeable nature of their skin. The frog legs on the "all you can eat" buffets almost always come from India (a country known for it's fine seafood and the most polluted waterway on earth-the Ganges) or Indonesia. I love frog legs but I would not knowingly eat them or any seafood from there. In Walmart and some markets around here there are packages of frozen shrimp with a big American flag and the name "The American Shrimp Company" on them. The country of origin? Vietnam! It's like a bad joke.

I don't think the STATE has a dog in this fight. They just rent to space to an entrepreneur who is responsible for what they serve. The owner of this one has, or had, another eatery on the island, but the name escapes me right now.

‘Merican’s want everything cheap cheap cheap. And vote with their dollars.
Or the guy who owns the business can buy local and eat the higher cost himself,...unlikely.

Yea, a few can call out that they won’t buy there, but that’s an outlier.

Add "catfish" from Asia to your radar too. Yes we grow them here in ponds, but not cheaply enough.

With the exception of shrimp, I rarely eat seafood that I don't catch myself. I prefer Gulf-caught shrimp and most good restaurants around here have them. For the record, though - I'd rather those shrimp come from Biloxi because I don't care to have this area swarming with shrimp boats. Any way you look at it, I'm not a big buyer of market or restaurant seafood.
