Just left the hospital from having kidney stone surgery part 1 of 2. Started hurting last night at around 9:30 and finally went to emergency room. Had tests ND found a 5 mm stone blocking a kidney. The finally gave me pa in med at 3:47 am and didn't have surgery until 6:30 this evening. No more tea for me.
BTDT - Berlin, 1989. Fortunately passed it at some point during the night. No paid meds. Thought I was dying. Laid in the hotel bed all night rolling back and forth in the fetal position, crying my ass off. Miserable is an understatement. I didn't know pain like that existed. I'd say about 14 on a scale of 1-10.
Yep that's about what it felt like. Now I'm peeing fire even with pain meds.

Dr said lay of hot tea in the morning and do NOT get dehydrated.

Suffering the "male jaws of death" is no joke. After I went through this back in my 30s, I converted a good 80% of my drinking habits to water only and so far no more (large) stones.
I still get a little surprise every now and again because I can't seem to completely let go of unsweetened tea and black coffee.
Drink more beer never had one myself.
The procedure I had pushed the stone back up to my kidney and cleared the blockage. I started thinking and this was my first hospital visit as a patient in 40 years. He installed a stint to keep it in place until I get back from GS next week and then I have another procedure to remove it at a different hospital. I love my sweet tea but a nurse told me 80% of their kidney stone patients drink tea all day every day so its got to go.
Sweet tea and Mountain Dew. A good number of patients we see with large stones are heavy Dew drinkers.
Until yesterday I drank sweet tea nearly every meal and sipped on it all day in between meals. From now on I'm going to try to just drink water with most every meal except milk for breakfast every once in a while. Once I get his one out I don't want to incubate another one.

Add a little lemon to your water. The citric acid helps dissolve the calcium in the stone. That's from the urologist that treated my son - not just an internet myth.

What is sweet tea? How do you make it? I know it's kind of a southern thing. Also, and I'm not trying to be an idiot here, but what's up with boiled peanuts? Like I said, just curious. Sorry if this post strayed a bit off topic.
Sweetea is Lipton ice tea (bags) made with boiling water and copious amounts of sugar. There is no recipe for sweetea. Either you knows or you doesn't
Boiled peanuts - just what the name implies. Best bought from an old guy wearing faded overalls with a cooker set up by his 40 year old truck on a rural highway---just past the sign for fresh cracklins/skins. Generally speaking, the further south you get, the spicier they tend to get. (Depending on where you live, cracklins and skins are the same thing or two different items)
oh - boiled peanuts should not be eaten while driving - they tend to be messy if fresh from the cooker

Sweet tea is just iced tea sweetened to your liking. The further south you get the sweeter it is. It is so sweet down here that in some places your spoon will stand up in it. I don't plan on drinking it any more since it put me in labor for the most miserable 24 hours of my life.
I hear you, I have gotten to where I order 1/2 sweet, 1/2 unsweet at most places and sometimes, its still too sweet for my taste. Some places its seems like its just brown sugar water...Quote:

Also, if want to try boiled peanuts when you can't find the roadside vendors DD suggested, go to a gas station. Most will have green boiled peanuts by Peanut Patch in a yellow/green bag or can. If you don't want them green or cold, then most stations will have hot boiled peanuts in a slow cooker. Grab a cup and go. You can also heat up the green ones by microwaving and then pouring out the liquid.
Boiled peanuts, to me, are good either way.
That's where I actually saw them for the first time, in a gas station in Alabama last year. What makes boiled peanuts better than say regular dry peanuts? Wanted to try some but never got the chance...anyone want to give a northerner tips/recipes on making them.Quote:

Same as apples. I love them raw, dried, cooked and cobblered, etc. An apple is an apple--you like it or you don't.
Best thing to do is gather a flavor or seasoning you like and add about 1/2 cup of salt per pound of peanuts. Bring water to a boil and simmer 1 to 3 hours. Once peanuts are soft inside the shells, they are ready to eat.
By the way, to add to this, if you end up liking peanuts and have a garden every year, then go get some raw peanuts and plant them between crop rotations.
The plants do amazing even in rough sandy soils, and 1 peanut will make 2 dozen more per plant.
If you practice crop rotation, planting peanuts, beans and other legumes will enrich your soil with many benefits that will help your followup crops in the fall and bless you with many free peanuts.
Once you dig out your peanuts, bury the plant right there or throw it in the compost pile.
When I lived in Auburn 30 years ago, there was "tea" and "unsweetened tea". Asking for sweet tea was redundant. And sweet tea is never sweetened with anything else but white sugar -- no sissy blue or yellow packets.

One of the things that angers me MOST is when I go to a restaurant and order unsweet tea, and they bring it to me with a spoon and a slice of lemon--leaving a metallic and citrus taste (yucckk!). Pet peeve alert! I'll send it back 100% of the time.
I like Milos best when it comes to unsweet "regular" tea flavor in the RTD (ready to drink) category. Otherwise, if I go through the trouble of brewing my own, I use a quality green tea.
You should never have them put lemon in your tea or water. Most persons cutting the lemon have not washed their hands or the lemon. (Tip from an insider)
