Dicks no longer selling firearms to under 21...

And immediately removing AR style guns from their stores and inventory.
This seems like a poor response to me. The Florida shooter could have just as easily used a browning or Remington semi auto traditional hunting rifle to the same effect and result. I don't own an AR and have no plans to, but this is like banning whiskey and continuing to promote and sell rum and vodka because someone drinking whiskey got behind the wheel and caused an accident.

So now, if you want to buy hunting firearms at dicks and you're under 21 you need to have mom and dad (or someone else) buy them for you.
I don't have a good solution to the problem, but this is a slippery slope and its not one that I want to slide down.

Anyone have any thoughts?

When folks have their emotional blinders on, all logic and common sense go out the window. Gun violence gets the headlines, but violence in general is the problem. The respect and value for human life has diminished (I believe there are several reasons why). We have a large population of mentally ill people living amongst us, some of whom aren't being treated and followed up with. Everyone seems to have forgotten the golden rule. Victim mentality is the norm. But as a believer, I feel that it all boils down to a sin/heart issue. Without a guiding moral principle, I am actually surprised it doesn't happen more often. My heart aches for the victims and their families. I, too, want something to be done, but knee-jerk reactions to emotional appeals is exactly what fordguy is alluding to. I wish I had an answer, but in the meantime, I will continue to get on my knees and pray.

I have no problem with Dick's making this business decision, its their company, they can choose to sell or not sell whatever they want, within legal guidelines of course.
And they have a right to express their views on gun laws. Just like the rest of us.
Will they lose some business? Probably. Will it deter me from shopping there? Nah.

The problem of mass shootings has many root causes, mental health of the shooter is very obviously the primary one.
But the availability of large capacity semi-auto firearms is also another major factor. How to address that within the confines of the 2nd Amendment is the problem.

A private company made an informed decision about which inventory they will carry in the future. If you want to buy one of those items, you go to another store that carries the item that you want. It's not a whole lot more complicated than that.

I may be stirring the pot, but could this approach be construed as constitutionally unenforceable, perhaps even illegal?
Otherwise what is to keep them (or ANY other business) from denying folks the same privilege of buying a product (or service) based on age.
Or denying any product or service to individuals or groups based on age, ethnicity, religion, race, hair color, amount of hair, number of teeth missing or whatever.
Isn't that the description of discrimination?

This isn't new... Dicks stopped selling ARs, AKs and 30rd mags years ago after Sandy Hook IIRC.

They have always been way overpriced and unwilling to compete on prices.
Many years ago I went in a Dicks once or twice, looked around and never went back.

Again - it's a private company and they can do what they want to. To Pier#r's point about "can they refuse to sell to 18 - 20 year olds?" if it's otherwise legal for them to buy a gun -- I don't know, but I think that he has a valid point on that one issue. If there's a challenge, it will come out in court and be settled there. I think that making a principled stand can be an admirable thing, even if you disagree with the stand. If they have policies that you don't like -- why not go somewhere else? It's not like there aren't other places to buy your guns if you're 19. They're saying - Go somewhere else. What's the problem?

They kept selling AR's Ak's in their sister store Field and Stream , Hypocrites are all they are , went to their website and used their online chat to tell them so , their keeping track of the number for their Headquarters , Don't care how small a slice of the pie 2A is worth the fight .

And I have made an informed decision to never set foot in their stores again. They are too expensive for me anyway. When I visited Target the first time and saw that they did not carry hunting and fishing supplies, I wrote them off and have never returned.

Use your dollar vote however you see fit. I do believe that anyone with access to a PC can find a better deal on any firearm online through sites like gun.deals (no sales tax)and that is the real reason they elected to stop selling them just like Wal-Mart did. They just siezed on the moment to make it seem like a political move. I haven't bought anything from them in years and this certainly won't make me want to shop there for anything else. Most people who wanted an AR or AK bought one when Barry O got elected or bought a second or third. You can buy Anderson AR stripped lowers 3 for $99.00 at Larry's Pistol and Pawn and a complete rifle kit(less lower receiver) for $249.99 from Ceratac. Add a couple of 30 round P-mags for a complete rifle for around $300. Liberty is a dangerous proposition. One which I choose to live with because the alternative isn't acceptable.

Yes, they are a private company (at least I think they are I've never checked to see if they were a publicly traded company). As such they're entitled to do as they see fit within the boundaries set by law. However, what they're doing sets a precedent that is potentially detrimental in a lot of ways. People who shoot up schools don't seem to be the type with a lot of imagination or creativity (if they were there would be much more death and destruction than what we've seen to date). It's less expensive and pretty simple to make a pipe bomb (and much more dangerous than several shots from an ar) but it does require some thought and preparation. You can't just go buy one and use it, but I'm headed off track a bit. Back to guns. When I was 8 years old, my grandfather gave me a .22 semi-auto that held 16 or 17 rounds. It was my first gun. I hunted a lot of squirrels with that rifle and did a lot of target shooting too. If you wanted to you could squeeze off all of those shots in the space of a few seconds. My grandpa's favorite rabbit and pheasant gun was a well worn but very serviceable Remington 870, it held 6 shots (I think) but again, if you were good with a pump you could get the lead out there in a hurry. I don't even want to think about what would happen if some moron loaded an 870 with buckshot and started firing into a panicked crowd. My point is that either of these firearms (and countless others) have the potential to be used for the same idiocy that Florida shooter chose. So should we make it impossible to acquire these guns too? Other stores are now being publicly criticized (shamed if you will) for continuing to sell assault style rifles and products. If unstable people (trying to be a little nicer than just using names "moron" or "idiot") can't get the gun from his (or her) favorite video game, what do you think will be the next gun they turn to? It will be one that's affordable and available and most likely a semi-auto just like the ar that they couldn't get. So lets say that we all start hunting with bows and ban guns altogether. Is that going to stop school shootings? Maybe. It's harder to smuggle a crossbow into a school, or a recurve or compound, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. So maybe we should get rid of our bows and crossbows too. We can use spears to go after our game animals and defend our homes. My point here is that if they (the unstable) want to commit the sort of acts that happened in Florida, they'll find a way unless we make schools more secure. I'm not an advocate of having armed teachers, but I wouldn't mind my kids having a teacher who was armed if I knew that they were certified and had the training. Arming teachers is really a stop gap measure though. What needs to happen is security that will keep said individuals (and any non students) from entering the school. What's the answer? Police officers? Metal detectors? The route that Dicks (and now Wallyworld) is taking leads to no firearms in the sporting goods store- which is their right. They aren't to that point yet, but they're on the path. My path from this point on will lead me to other sporting goods stores.

I already have a number of evil looking, so-called assault rifles.
Three ARs and three AKs, not to mention some others.
With all of this I may just to buy another just to give the finger to the anti-2A establishment.

Anyone else watch that, I did and it both scared and disgusted me.

My daughter's school has an armed police officer during the school day and they are also at sporting events. I would rather see them and teachers and armed staff attempt to stop a shooter with a gun rather than catch bullets with their bodies. Proper training would be a requirement hands down. Biometric safes are pretty inexpensive so students wouldn't be able to easily acess them. I read and hear about teachers possibly flipping out and shooting students and missing the shooter and accidentally shooting innocent bystanders. Law enforcement have the same challenges yet we deal with it. Again I prefer dangerous freedom to peaceful slavery. I also read where the 2nd Amendment doesn't protect AR 15's and other semiautomatic weapons and that it only covers muskets and hunting rifles. The 2nd Amendment wasn't written to protect us when the deer try to attack us.

Never had the desire for an ar or real use.....till a dang deal came along on a custom built one....still really haven't even got it sighted in with the new scope, then got another on sale when the push got hard to ban them....never shot it yet....
sure would like to use my late uncles 30remington my aunt gave me when visiting her in California. ....dang thing hurts the shoulder to fire (no but pad)....be a good hog gun
