It's Haywires fault.... They came to eat...
Yesterday was mostly stormy with a chance of lightning, so we sat around the porch swinging, cleaning, and watching my Springer and the recently adopted pound mix play.
We were busy cleaning out when I noticed several large does walking through the front peanut patch( about 30 acres). I started looking for a bachelor group that I 've been seeing.. They are really showing promise, 1 of them is on the hitlist for this fall.
Anyhooo... I noticed SEVERAL deer(more than my hands and toes could count) move into the the field at the wood line about 300 yards away as the rain slacked. They were really dark brown and had an odd shape. I had my little nephew grab the bino's and my step dad glassed them and said, much to my disappointment, that it was a herd of hawgs...
Now... Living on the Pearl River, in a swamp, we are no stranger to hogs, however, I killed about 40 two years ago and had not seen any since. So I had been very optimistic about no stupid hogs destroying the peanuts or bothering my 'bird and squirrel corn'.. I blame this all on Mr. Wire :)... He commented about dang hogs on my last post, so it's bound to be his fault right?
Anyway, being that my liberal nephews and nieces from CA wanted to shoot an AR15 while they were down last month, I allowed them to shoot every single round I had out there.... So I grabbed one of the 308's and dashed out to the field..
I got in position and ranged it to 320. I loaded a few rounds, shouldered the rifle and....... condensation... the house is a cool 68 degrees and it was every bit of 90 even in the rain... SO I got the scope clear enough to get on target, I picked the largest sow, and sent lead down range. I only got two shots off before the herd cleared, I know the 1st one made contact where I wanted, the second was on a piglet, at a wide open sprint.. I doubt I hit it..
I got on the fourwheeler, and brought the my English Springer(Kimber), the pound dog(Layla), and the old farm Chessy(Bear), across the field. The two young dogs and I went in, they got on the blood trail and made quick work of her. The hog only made it about 50 yards, down the steepest, thickest, swampy ravine on the entire place.. I had just killed a huge Nope Rope yesterday... All I could think of is stepping on one, or seeing one eye level as I was basically standing parallel with the hill as I went down.
Anyway, mom and Lizzy brought the 2nd fourwheeler and some rope... We got her out, and tossed some on the grill for supper. Fresh Zucchini, topped with cheese, fresh fried okra, and grilled pork chops...
