I had one briefly get in the boat with me when I hung a crankbait up an overhanging tree and shook him off a limb by accident. I was standing on the front pedestal seat slapping him with a Bionic Blade rod and screaming like a little girl. Thankfully he hissed at me and rolled off into the water. It was probably only 2 ft long but I had bad dreams for years.
I've had a few cotton mouths come at me in my kayak. Not a fun feeling. About 2 months back my uncle and I were out in his boat fishing and decided to call it a day. I did the boat and he backed in the trailer. Got everything strapped down and we could both smell the snake but couldn't see it. I go to raise the motor and lock it down and there it is, curled up looking at me in the back of the boat around the motor a foot away from where I was just putting straps on the boat. Guess it was my lucky day.
That's an unmistakeable and unforgettable smell.
All we have here in coosa county are timbers,don't kill em unless they are in the yard,or where the wife and dog walk,,,anything that eats rodents is my buddy,allergy to where they have been here,,,Meanwhile seems to me them and snapping turtles have a yearly migration route from my 30 years being here in the woods,,,always the same places same time of year,,did see some impressive photos off my sisters boyfrens phone of a guy that got bit 2 times by a cottonmouth between Rockford and 65 launching a johnboat, He was at the horsepistol in Prattville in 30 minutes,got 9 units of antivenom and was out in 2 days,,,,always look,and don't be in the water behind the boat,, they are always going to the water to escape,,DUH HUH??
Here in Elmore County that's all I see are timbers and they always try to move out of your way. Copperheads always worry me, I do a lot of amphibian research over in some creeks in Tallassee and have to go through a long stretch of leaf litter in the woods. I don't think I've ever looked down at my feet that long while walking. Copperheads will not move until you step on them.Quote:

Been a volunteer for Alabama Water Watch for about 15 years, going out once a month to collect samples and data. See mostly a variety of different water snakes ( banded and such ), which are always in danger of being killed because they look so much like the cottonmouthed water rattler. Never kill anything I ain't eating.

I live on Lay Lake and have had many cottonmouths charge my boat and try to get in. Many died!
I know that snakes are here for a reason, but when I see one, I can't remember what that is.
They all appear to be a CottonmouthDiamondbackWaterRattlers to me!
