Looking for a bargain place to stay for a week this spring

My wife and I are wanting to come down for about a week this spring and I am looking for a good price on a place to stay. Just the two of us. Does not have to be on the beach or a fancy condo. Something on the Lagoon or one of the canals so we could do a little crabbing as well would be great. We are sort of locked on the general dates because of other commitments and it cannot be earlier that 20Apr and we must be back home by 15May. Clean is important to her. If any one has a suggestion send me a message and I will appreciate it.

We really like Lagoon Run. Walking distance to the Lagoon pass and a dock for trout and redfish at night, and I’ve done well with the crab trap there.

We have stayed here several times, and it is very reasonable. You will have access to a private pier for crabbing and fishing. Owner lives a couple hundred yards away and is super accommodating. He even has crab traps you can use. Small cabin, but has everything you could need. It is in Bon Secour, only about fifteen minutes from the beach.

Guys come on......Put your thinking caps on and come up with some other places for the people from out of town to stay.

The hurricane really put the whack on a lot of places. The availability is a fair amount more sparse than it is usually. I know that at the plantation there are only two of the seven buildings fully open. Some of the others are only open in a very limited capacity. This means that a lot of the snowbirds were shut out. And the usual spring time vacationers were as well. Availability is not what it usually is...not due to anything other than the whims of Mother Nature. It’s possible that some owners are taking advantage of the squeeze and are asking more than usual....capitalism in action so to speak. My thinking is if something comes up that is available, and meets parameters,...it’s likely the best/only choice to be had.
I’ve seen lots and lots of roofs still being repaired even now...and building four,...a medium high rise in our complex, is still stripped to the studs and in a state where you can see right through it. Hurricanes are a bear.

It's not that locals don't want to help. It's that we don't ever do any searches for places to stay down here. And if we did a search, it would be online, which gives us no particular advantage and certainly not the advantage of having personal experience with the properties. When I lived in Atlanta and would visit this area I occasionally used the Gulf Shores Racquet Club (VRBO) on the beach road going toward Little Lagoon Pass. But that was 3-5 years ago or more. I wouldn't have characterized it as a "bargain", but it was convenient to the area. And it did have a small lighted fishing dock from which to "crab" and try for speckled trout at night.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I have found a place for a few days stay in early May and plan to fish the pier every day. Finding a place with a pier and crab catching access on any of the backwater proved difficult. Most piers were damaged or wiped out and one man told me about the delays in getting a permit to rebuild. Watch for the old man with the walking stick and the sun hat.

The condo rates have gone up a lot since last year. The same units are $40.00 a night more now than 2020. But the lockdown was still in effect too.

oldfisherman, didn't you used to stay at the four seasons quite a bit? If so, is it out of action or booked solid or ????

Yes I do stay at Four Seasons every fall for a month most years. Prices then are more within my reach but this time of year the prices are a little steep. The Four Seasons Pier is now functional again. Many of the units are still undergoing repair. It is a great place to stay and in the fall I will see the same people year after year. Some of them have been coming for over 20 years. The guard shack people are great. The pier has sanded in quite a bit after the beach replenishment project a few years ago and that has affected the fishing some but I still enjoy it. The major fishing impact has been to the frequency of catching King Mackerel. The shallow water has greatly impacted that. I still usually do well with the Pompano and Whiting which are my favorites. Flounder have been off the last two years. If price is not a consideration I still recommend Four Seasons any time.
