Does anyone have any experience with a model 710 or 712 green reels?
Greenies came before the black and gold reels, but are essentially similar. I've used mostly the black and gold. The long-time striped bass record from shore of 78 lbs was caught on a 710, for what that's worth.
"And yes I recall the reel was a 710-- but I recall he said it was on 15 mono... which on that reel would = say 160- 180 yards or so." IGFA rated the line as 20 and I think is still the line class record.
What did you actually want to know, now that trivia night is over?
I just happened on a few 5 or 6 for what I thought was a good price. I bought a Penn 209 and a sabiki rod with a reel. I just wanted to know what they were worth. Or if I should just leave them alone. I also got a call from a guy with several Fenwick blanks. Thanks for the response
I am quite familiar with the green Penn 710 and 712.
Both of these typically sell for $40 - $60 on eBay.
They date back to the 1960s and 70s, but are 'workhorse' reels that still endure.
The retrieve is a little slow by today's standards (about 3.6:1), but the drag and line capacity are quite adequate for plugging.
Not nearly as smooth as more 'modern' reels either, and the line roller on the 710 leaves a lot to be desired.
Also the spool of the 710 is essentially plastic (6 year old at that), and subject to split under too much pressure.
I always liked the 712 better, and the two ultralites (714 and 716) even better!

Depending on the action,length, & price , I would get the Fenwicks too for a couple builds
+1 Some of those older brown Fenwick 2 piece rods were state of the art 40 years ago!
I got 2 one two piece the other one piece. Both brown Fenwick glass blanks. The Price was too good to turn down.
