Wire Leader in the Surf
If using a wire leader in the surf is it necessary to use a shock leader? If so what knots should be used for the setup?

What are you fishing for?
Only thing you really need wire for in the surf is if you are shark fishing. And I will leave that answer to the shark fisherman in the group.
Outside of that, the only time you need a leader any bigger than 15# mono in the surf is if the bluefish or Spanish move in close, even then 50# mono is fine.Carl

So large size mono is OK against blues with no need for wire. Fishing soaker bait for whatever as far as I can chunk it.

Yep, I use 50# mono for blues.
For a big soaker bait (cut mullet??), I am guessing you are targeting bull reds but you also might get a shark. Bull reds aren't known for being leader shy, so a short single strand wire leader wont hurt.Carl

+1 on using mono for reds.
If you MUST use wire to target them the nylon coated 7 strand wires are best IMHO.

Proper functioning circle hook "can" make wire redundant.
Tom, we really enjoyed hearing you two tonight at Post 44. We have heard you before at the Elks Club, but you were in particularly good voice tonight. That was as fine a rendition of "You Were...
