Thunder Chickens

I went to roost some Gobblers on my lease yesterday evening... Picture a large tract of timber with a single dirt road running just over 3 miles through the center.. I was in my little commuter car(ford fusion) and managed to make it to the 1st bridge(about a half mile in). I walked about a mile further to a tall ridge and made a hoot or two. I had one sound off about 100 yards through the woods. I went down a little farther and jumped a gaggle of hens in a lane on accident.
It was getting dark and I decided to make my way back to the car... I got in sight of my car, and down the hill a hen was inspecting my license plate.. She apparently had no fear of my car.. Just for kicks I hooted a few times.. A gobbler sounded off to the immediate right of my car and to my current positions left. So I just sat down and let the mosquito's feast on my pale googan skin and waited until they flew up and it was good and dark.
This is my 1st year back turkey hunting since a young teen, I gave it up when my uncle unknowingly tossed/boosted me on a cotton mouth when we were trying to get up a creek bank. I didn't get bit but I decided a friggin turkey wasn't worth getting popped over.
20 years later I'm going to try it again.. hopefully the snakes will be slow with this cold weather...

btw... I saw several white/piebald turkeys (hens and gobblers) during deer season.. Should make a pretty mount.

Turkeys can be surprisingly wary and then just as surprisingly stupid. Crazy birds!

I hope you get a happy "welcome back" to turkey hunting. I'm looking forward to a pretty opening day next week.
