Personally, I don't think you want to confuse him with too much at first. Important to remember that a young pup has an attention span of about 2 to 5 minutes and develops slowly. At times you will see zero attention - that's a definite caution time for you. Easy to get frustrated. There will be times he just flat doesn't want to work.
Pointing is a natural instinct. If it is in him he will show it. You can always develop it later after he is solid on his retrieving.
just remember - you're essentially training an 3-4 yr old child. Sometimes they just say, "NO!" and eat the crayons.

I know nothing about training, but I had a friend many years ago that had a pair of retrievers and a house boat in the delta.
When he would pick up his shotgun, one would run to the boat and the other would dive under the bed to retrieve dust bunnies!
