Weiss Lake

Well.... our cabin is finally installed on our lakefront lot(after 20 years of procrastinating). Our pier is ready, (all 30' of it) and we will be up building the walkway from the cabin down to the pier.

I was looking on the 'species of Weiss Lake list' and came across Red Drum... I know they are in brackish, but Weiss is fresh and cold. Is that possible? I know most of the species there as I've fished it consistently for 25 years. Also they said rainbow trout and small mouth are present.. Any ideas on where I would target rainbow trout there???

Red drum: nope.

Freshwater drum: definitely present in Wiess Lake.

I seriously doubt rainbows, the Sipsey River tailrace is the only place I know of where they are regularly stocked.

I saw that too. They are over reaching on the red drum.

Trout are few and far between. There were some stockings in the far upper reaches of Little River a long time ago. Also some current stocking of a trout creek in GA that eventually feeds into it. There are walleye in there though - kind of uncommon for the Coosa drainage.

Edit: after a bit more searching - I found this. An article from 2003 about trout in Alabama. It seems a previous state record rainbow came from Weiss in 1991.

For Rainbows you'd have to go to he mouth of Little River or possibly Yellow Creek where they come off the mountain. I know the East Fork of Little River in GA is stocked through the DNR. I've never caught a Drum in Weiss, but ive never targeted them there either. Plenty of Crappie, Stripers, and White Bass. Where is your cabin located there? I only ask because we're setting our camper up on lot there this weekend, on the Coosa side close to the Alabama Queen, just south of Cobia bridge.

Nytro, its near Bay Springs Motel a 5 minute boat ride across part of the lake.

No red drum only freshwater white drum.

You're not far from Yellow Creek, great crappie fishing in that channel.

I think that catching trout on Weiss Lake would be an anomaly, at best. But what a great crappie lake! Excellent largemouth, bluegill and shellcracker populations, too! Mr. C., you may want to put some brushpiles under your dock to attract baitfish and put you some good lights out there for night fishing! You're gonna catch some whoppers.

I've caught freshwater drum at Weiss. Good eating! Maybe order you a couple of Catalpa trees and produce your own Catalpa worms for bait! Catfish love 'em!

as strange as it still is to me, but i've caught a few rainbow trout outside of the gorgas steam plant on the warrior river. and that water coming through is warm!

Now that is strange!

Yea. We used to troll and would load up on crappie. My uncle had a huge house with mostly glass across the front 2 stories. He was just across the cove from our place...

Thanks! I have a handful of catalpa trees on our place in MS. Our little dock is on a rock wall, and we have some shelter as you mentioned. I haven't thought about a new light. Had one on the old pier but I guess we never thought about it when building the new one.



CarlF: I've got a buddy with a 30ft camper getting ready for some trout fishing at Sipsey Fork. Thanks for that tip. :) Much appreciated. I've only caught bass/blue gill/crappie on my fly rod. Didn't know we had a place that close.
Do you know any 'special super secret areas?'

Never fished the Sipsey, its way north of me.
All my trout fishing was up in northeast PA, around where Chili went this past spring.

We'll we finally got our camper setup yesterday. Nice little cove in the Cowan Creek area close to the Alabama Belle. I haven't fished that area since I was a young'un with my dad. Never ran a boat in that part of the lake before either, but wont really have to worry about that until i can get another boat.
