Take it from me If there is anyway possible for you to make the move to Gulf Shores" DO IT " I'm originally from North Carolina and lived for 10 years on the water on the MisTsissippi Gulf Coast after an early retirement and have traveled to many tropical destinations and absolutely nothing compares to living in Gulf Shores on the beach We moved here in September 2013 and my only regret is we didn't do it 10 years earlier It is spectacular I'm looking at the beach right now and I can take my dogs for a walk and be the only person on the beach Temperature is comfortable with a jacket I love Pier Fishing and the Gulf State Pier is absolutely the best pier fishing environment that you could ever find so much so that I sold my boat and the responsibilty and cost that came with it because I didn't need it Even so I now have access locally to 16-20 boats from 16-24 ft and over 200 nationally for a cost per month for less than it was costing me to store my boat at a marina All I have to do is call or reserve one and it s sitting in the water waiting for me When I'm through fishing I drive it back to the dock park it get out and go home No cleaning putting up etc No paying for repairs insurance etc Doesn't get much better than that and I'm thinking about giving that up because the Pier and Surf fishing is so great and easy that I don't even have time to use the boats Off season resturant deals are unbelieveable Wife and I eat great seafood for less than $10 total for both almost anytime we want Even the summers are not bad from a crowd standpoint if you get away from Orange Beach ( I live 9 miles down Fort Morgan RD with easy access to everything and almost have the beach to myself in the Fall ) Real Estate values for a buy in the right area are increasing at 10-12% even 15% a year It just goes on and on Didn't mean to get longwinded I just wish someone had told me these things 10 years ago I know where I would have been I'd advise anyone that could to move here or maybe I really shouldn't Don't want to let too many know how close to Heaven this is At any rate if I can assist anyone in securing a little piece of this Heaven let me know I know some excellent Realtors Fishing Locations and Guides Places to Avoid Places to Look At Boat Clubs etc
well its one of those we were already considering moving when i got injured. our home is almost paid for so figure if we get a small settlement from the injury that combined with the sell of the house could get us a decent home and get out of south mississippi.
It's a great place to live. I too made the move from Northern Wiscomsin to Foley and am glad I did. Living in paradise every day... Now instead of being a Yankee, my local friends call me a Damn Yankee. Lol, gotta love 'em.
A yankee comes down for a visit. A damn yankee comes down for a visit and stays!
I love living in Mobile, the area we are in has a fantastic elementary and middle school, Rousses Market, banks, bakeries, pharmacy, library, church and urgent care all within easy walking distance.
I can be in GS/OB in an hour, on Dauphin Island in 45 minutes, and launching a boat to go fishing or hunting in the Mobile Delta in 20 minutes.
Great restaurants and shopping in all directions.
There are some fantastic older neighborhoods to live in other than ours and downtown is beginning to be a good spot as well.
Most of the conveniences of the big city without being in one. New Orleans is only 2 hours away and Atlanta is 5 hours. Close enough but far enough too!
Dan s you are correct I have a picture in my beach house that says "heaven is a little bit closer when you at the beach." I would say move to lower alabama while you still can before it gets too expensive to do so.
