Guys at J&M are very knowledgeable about the pier. Won't sell you more than you need either. Check with them and let them know what fish you will be targeting. You can't go wrong with John and his staff.

What fshntime said. They won't try to sell you rigs that are too big and squid for bait and J&M unless you insist on it. For the trout, whiting, flounder, slot reds, etc., your bass weight tackle will be fine--- 10# to 12# test---and for the bull reds and kings, you'll want an 8' med. fast rod and a reel that will hold 300 yds. of 15# test. J&M has this tackle in all grades, except maybe the super cheap and worthless stuff. If you are stupid rich, they can take care of that, too, and you'll be smiling when you walk out the door. They have the right tackle and most excellent customer service---I've walked in there on a busy Saturday with a busted rod tip and had them fix it in ten minutes and laugh at my dumb jokes while they worked. All the sales guys are fishermen and we see them on the pier often.

FYI---Neither fishntime nor I own any stock there. They are just that good to do business with.

Penn and Shimano are excellent brands that have different levels of quality tackle depending on your pocketbook.

I'll reinforce everything that has been said pertaining to J&M Tackle.
They're a class act that's very hard to follow.
I could relate anecdotal stories of the owner's graciousness but you'd think I was telling tall tales.
    Yeah, they're that nice.

What's been said about J&M. And add a nice fish on the hook.
