is there a way to make the site email you when someone replies to your thread or to a post you posted?

Yes, but you have to set it up from the default (no email notification).
Go to your 'Profile'
choose 'Modify profile'
choose 'Notifications'
then check the box that says to send you an email when someone replies to a topic.
last 'Save settings'
