    threads from old board

I was doing a search for an old Mitchell 302 thread that I think was on the old board; it was about adding a geared side plate to the off side of the reel to add strength. Do you remember this thread, or am I dreaming this? I looked in DIY and sent Chris a message, but maybe he didn't see it.

You aren't imagining things. I believe the thinking behind this mod was that the additional main gear with both anti-reverses engaged would make the A-R stronger with less back play. If I recall correctly, someone claimed it made the reel smoother. I do remember mocking up a double main gear on a 302, I had modified and had running fairly smooth, by using the drive side plate from a second reel. In my particular case, the extra main gear put too much pressure and resistance on the pinion gear making it hard to turn the reel and the with two A-R dogs engaged it was noisy. I may could have taken the time to adjust the gear lashes to make it reel freer, but decided that it just wasn't worth the effort to me.

Here is something that I remember posting on the old forum that I think might interest you. I think I may have sent you these already, but in case I didn't or you lost them here they are again.
