30 years ago today

March 16, 1988. 21 years old and went to the city of OB and canceled my John's Custom Rods business license and was issued a J&M Tackle business license. With the help and support from a lot of you, we went from a couple thousand square foot shop to the twenty three thousand foot store we are today. The part that hurts the most is Mike's and my mother spend almost 29 years working with us 5+ days a week and I have tears in my eyes while typing because I miss her so much and with out her this place would not exist....... Congratulations on the 30 years. I'm just a tourist that can only makes it down about 3 weeks a year but J&M is almost a daily visit. It doesn't matter if I'm there to purchase a new rod and reel, get line put on my reels, get a new hat or just get a couple dozen shrimp, the staff are always pleasant and helpful. It's a great feeling to know if you have a problem or a question someone there can help you. Thank you for providing excellent service to all.

The best way we can honor our mons is being Men they would be proud of. Your are certainly doing that. You run a great store and have a great family. Thanks for all the kind words guys, I'm a very Blessed person. The longest time I spent away from my parents was on my honeymoon for three weeks. My 87 year old dad is in the store almost everyday hanging out, my wife, brother, and his wife are in the same office as me and all of our kids have worked or currently work here while not in school.

John was one of the first members of the forum that I met in person on the pier. When we are in the store, he always makes it a point to say hey so yes, I am visiting friends when I go to J&M. It just seems to always cost me $300 to get out the door :) Great place and we'll see you in June.

Congrats on 30 years and may the next 30 be just as fun as prosperous! You've got the right recipe of friendly staff, helpful info, reasonable prices, and excellent variety...keep up the great work!

Congrats on the 30 years. All that work on securing permits, finding and keeping lines of credit, employee complications, making payroll, securing suppliers, the constant struggle of competing with the huge corporations, etc.etc. and then a milestone comes along as this, and you reflect on the hard work and constant struggles of owning and running a Family business and you realize you wouldn't change a thing. Myself and I'm sure everyone on this board is happy you stuck it out, what a wonderful place to shop, friendly and knowledgeable staff more than fair prices and Great Hours. I'm not saying the next 30 will be easier, but as you know it will be different because everyday has a different struggle. THANK YOU.

We always make it a point to go by J&M every trip to the Gulf, whether it's just a one day trip or a week. It's a pleasure to shop at such a top notch store with an outstanding staff!

Thanks for the post John, I know you miss your mom and I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you as well for not only running my favorite business in Alabama but for being a truly nice guy. I always enjoy visiting with you when I'm there. Carry on-thirty plus more, I hope to be around for a lot of it.

What an incredible milestone, and heartfelt testimony to your family and the hard work which has paid off. Very proud of you, John, and the values you stand for in keeping your family legacy forward, honoring your mother, and the services J&M provides to the community. You are a quality person and that shows by the way you and your staff treat people.
That comes from your upbringing.
You are always my first stop before I check in to my condo.
A couple years ago when I brought my dad down for a week he was curious why J&M was where I had to buy everything I needed.
By the time we left he understood!
He still talks about how well he was treated just sitting at the front table watching everybody while he had a coffee and a donut while I did my shopping.
He was just a first timer there and he felt at home and welcomed.
Continued success.

John, the welcome you and your staff provide us "part timers" would make your mom proud. It's a true blessing to be comfortable in our ignorance, and know that any question will be answered with understanding and patience. That atmosphere does not come by chance, but from true kindness and good will.
We only make it down a couple times a year, but make it a starting place for every trip. The pace of normal life is quickly striped from us and we ease our way into bliss just by cruising the aisles shopping and dreaming of the big catch. It's our home town store - even if we are not at home and you don't know our names.
One day, we hope both to change both of those....
