I caught a 35" Red Snapper off of the head boat today. The only picture we got of it was of the head of it and Ron's thumb.

Very nice What boat are you fishing out of. We are coming down from WI. 2/10 for fishing and warmth I hope. This the first time to AL. for a vacation. The Navarre area of FL. is where we have been going.
Welcome aboard crappie
Thanks Coach
Yes, welcome aboard Crappie. We went out on the Gulf Winds of the Reel Surprise Charters out of Orange Beach. They took 2 boats out today, the Southerner and the Gulf Winds II. Lenny was the skipper on ours. The boat boys were Randy & Sara. Actually, the fishing wasn't that great but everyone caught fish. There were some real nice red snappers caught, I think mine was the biggest and I caught him on the way up on the last pull before heading home. Just luck! I could have used the FinChaser on the camera though. Does anyone have any idea what a 35" red snapper would weigh. I googled it and didn't find much, but I didn't look very hard. I got a real nice thumb print from Ron.
I live less than 100 miles So. of you Crappie.
Nice one for sure Mr.fly
Length/Weight Conversion
23# 12oz
Thank you, David. I was hoping that either you or Karl would come up with something. It looks like a very good chart. I could have used Mr. Fin on the camera though, I'm sure he would have kept his thumb out of the way. (LOL)
I had hooked an AJ just before the snapper, the capt. saw it, but it broke my 50# test line, and I thought the AJ had come back when I caught the snapper. It was a fun 1/2 hour. Thank the Lord!
Mr. Flyguy how far out do you go. Took a trip out of Destin that was 4 hrs that is 1.5 out 1.5 back 1 hour of fishing. Three of us caught over 80 fish so catching we really great. My wife and I are going to take at least one trip while we are down there. I have never caught a Red fish so that would be real bonus for us. I will be trying my hand on the pier for the beach and the sea wall.
As a rule, we will spend 2 hours out, 2 hrs. back and 2 hrs. fishing. It depends on the Capt. as to which direction we go. All the Capts. are good this year. Last year A rookie Capt. backed into a dock piling while trying to dock it, not once but twice. He pulled ahead after he had hit it the first time, and then backed into it the second time. Considerable damage to the left rear corner of the stern. It was his first and last trip. I'm not sure how many times he tangled up our lines while we were fishing. It was not a good trip. Randy, the owner, has two boats running now. His biggest, the Reel Supprise, is having an overhaul. The two Capts. that are working now are Tristen & Lenny, and they are booth good. The boat boys are Randy, Preston & Sara and they are real good.
If your bride is going to inland fish with you, go to the new seawall by Perdido Pass. It's a nice easy place to fish and spend the day. They tell me that it is snaggy, but I haven't had any problem but I just fish along the wall for sheepies. It seems to be fairly deep where I have fished, maybe 12'. Surf fishing the beach is a crap shoot for me, and I haven't been on the Pier yet but it seems to be heating up, maybe by the time you are here, it will be hot.
The Reel Supprise is located a little to the West of the Perdido Pass Bridge on the No. side of Hwy 182. The prices are; $65, $65, $50, and the last trip on you punch card is free.
Tight Lines, my friend.
Still burns me up that you can pay a business to let you keep a couple snapper, but I can't hop in my boat with my son and keep any. I quit recommending head boats to people because it feels like I am reducing my own fishing options by doing so.

Judge Rules Against CCA in Red Snapper Case
Quote:
This month, a federal judge upheld the ruling on a highly controversial Gulf red snapper management plan called Amendment 40, or sector separation. The amendment divides the recreational red snapper quota, equal to 51.5 percent of the total allocation, between private recreational anglers (57.7 percent) and licensed charter captains (42.3 percent). Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) filed its lawsuit against implementation of Amendment 40 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico on April 22, 2015, following a 10-7 vote by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council to pass the amendment in October 2014. In its lawsuit submitted to the Eastern District Court of Louisiana, CCA charged that Amendment 40 constitutes agency action that is arbitrary and capricious, an abuse of discretion, not in accordance with law and in excess of statutory jurisdiction, authority or limitations. Amendment 40 will take effect for up to three years.
Thanks for the information flyguy. Do you or anybody else know if you can fish off the rip rap seawall at perdido pass.
As far as I know you can, but I'm to old to try. I would hate to break my leg or arm or head and loose any fishing time.
Wicked:it's open to fish anywhere you'd like if your willing to make to hike out there!
