If you like a bailed reel, the 704 is better.if you like a manual then go with a 706. And no,installing a conversion kit on a 704 doesn't make it a 706. The only way to do that is to install a 706 rotor,spool,bearing,ect......Just remember,to flip the bail on a 704 you must turn the handle. You can't flip it by hand. That's my 2 cents, others will feel different.
That's about it, John nailed it pretty much.
They are essentially the same reel inside, but the manual bail, distinct handle knob and slightly larger line capacity set the 706 apart in my book. :headbang:
For me,the handle is one thing the 704 has over the 706. When I get the two 700's from Chef, that will give me two more torpedo handles to put on a couple of reels.
706 all day long man
The only disadvantage for me personally with the 704's is that a strong cast can cause the handle to rotate, flipping the bail and snapping off my bait. I have a manual conversion on one of my 704's for throwing cigs.
I know the top end is a little beefier on a 706, but the 704's have been plenty of reel for pier fishing for me. Actually, I'm a Zebco cardinal 7 slut and they are not nearly as robust as the Penn's
And for the life of me I can't understand why the 706 sounds like it has a bad bearing in it. There is no bearing on any other reel that sounds that bad.
Please be advised I'm a twice a year pier fisherman. The real experts all seem to use 706's that sound like coffee grinders or those high dollar van $$$,
Not saying what I use my two weeks out of the year (stop laughing) but I like it.
but
Why do the 706's sound like they have been rusted?
I like the 704 greenies thats what i have and use

Forty years of use and abuse gives them the right ;-) LOL

i thought they made that because of the roler.
the sound your talking about
it is the roller but you have to catch fish on them to get the wear in the bearing to produce the sound. thats what david meant by use and abuse
[font=comic sans ms][size=12pt]If you fish next to Wetzel, you will need hearing protection. :run
So you are saying when a new one is purchased they are quiet
yep thats right

+1 thats what i have. i have a manual kit, drilled out spool and its painted.
just picked up a greenie 706 with a little boat rash(paint loose)....maybe be able to use it one day :boohoo:
how much?
127.50 ....debating on painting it or not now.....should leave it like it is (for the old school look)....and custom paint the other beater z, I got last year....and it really isn't a beater, just not like the new one I have in the box
there was a nice one on the pff...but he PM'ed me a price of 300.00........I passed,......don't really use the ones I have...... yet
If you decide to powder coat the old black one I will be happy to give you one of the metal side plates I got off of Chef last week.
And what's wrong with the 705 and 711 ??????? Except having to turn your rod around to use them ????????? Seriously any lefties out there have an opinion about the Penn 705 or n 711???
How can you tell the difference between a 706 and a 704 with a manual conversion kit/new rotor cup and bearing? I bought a "706" gold spool the other day because it was a good price and I wanted a manual but it doesn't have any badging and I'm not good enough to tell the difference.

Thanks John. does it really need it or just for looks??
More than likely the black reel has a plastic side plate. You can't powder coat plastic.

if the 704 has a new rotor it will not have a conversion kit. a conversion kit is only used for the original 704 rotor. the only way to know would be open up the gearbox and look for part number. only problem with that is more than likely even the original 706s had 704 housings and internal parts

Thanks I don't care either way, I paid 100 bucks and it seems like a good deal. Caught a 3 ft blacktip on it the other day and it performed flawlessly.

I did not know that...... I will check ....still not sure if I will go that route either, it isn't that bad and not getting worse sitting in the cabinet....got it so I wouldn't have to worry about messing up the new one when & if..... I fished it....always could make a stainless or aluminum side plate
But thanks a bunch for the offer.... Mr. John :headbang:
