Abu Garcia V5000
Digging around in the basement tonight and came across an old/new Abu Garcia V5000 Ambassadeur(green) mounted on a
Abu Garcia Vantage Composite rod, 6ft. one piece. medium heavy action, 10-25# line, 1/4 - 3/4 oz. lure. I bought it years ago for freshwater, never made it that far so aside from dust build up it has never been used.
I am getting more into salt water fishing so I am wondering does this setup have any value add to being used in salt water, I mainly just surf fish. I can't remember the # but I spooled it with Spiderwire braid.

If you mainly surf fish I suggest you get a longer rod. I'm not saying you have to get something capable of heaving past the first bar, I'm just saying it's nice to be able to ''reach out'' to where the fish are. I would go into details but I don't use baitcasting gear in saltwater so I don't know how much of what I would say would be relevant.
Braid is the right choice for most light to medium duty surf fishing. I've tried Spiderwire EZ braid and it didn't work well at all, but I've heard good things about their Stealth braid. Big fish may pull your line across the first bar if they go deeper, so mono can be useful for its abrasion resistance in that scenario.
Overall you don't want to worry to much about gear. Quite a few decent fish have been caught on spiderman rods.

Decent versatile reel.
Good tip Tom! These two big fellas were screaming like girls when that happened to them last week... LOL
A Spadefish safety tip!
