Allbright knot to wire question.
I normally tie 50 lb mono leader to a short piece of wire with an Allbright knot in order to avoid using a swivel. I am aware that I can lose some strength at this connection as the wire seems to cut the mono (which is why I use a length of 50 lb between my main line (12 to 25 lb) and the wire).
Yesterday I lost a good fish when the 50 lb mono broke at the knot to 40 lb single strand (first time this has happened with 50 lb). My question is: would a larger diameter single strand be less likely to cut the mono at the knot? It seems probable, but I'm asking for experience.
Maybe I am, to quote Haywire, pole vaulting over a mouse turd, and need to just start using swivels, but I really like avoiding them.
The fish was probably a cobia as another fisherman on the boat, at the same depth, simultaneously hooked a 50 lb cobia that was landed, so I'm really disappointed.
