Ill be coming down from KY next week and wanna do some fishing while im there. im interested in some shore fishing as well as any good fresh water fishing in the area. Does anyone have any advice for me as far as fishing license [where to get one], what type of rig i would need on the shore, best lakes in the area? any other advice would be greatly appreciated. id like to go into it with some sort of local knowledge. thanks guys

Maybe a 'trip' license combo (for fresh & salt water) would be more economical? ($27.10 + $26.10)
Anyway you can research the best deal for you and what will fit your needs and spend your vacation time concentrating on places to go and things to do.
Lake Shelby has some decent fishing, but very little public access to the shoreline.
Mostly its marshgrass and cattails (check out Google Earth or Google Maps)
The Gulf State Park beaches and pier offer the best venues in that area IMHO.

Best advice anyone could give you is to book a trip with pier#r. He will save you money and time getting started.
Double down on the above. Freshwater opportunities are kind of limited in GS-OB. Come spend a few days at the pier and become a saltwater addict. Bring an aerated minnow bucket from home and buy some bull minnows to catch flounder and live shrimp will catch a variety of things. A couple of bubble rigs or looney jigs for Spanish. Best advice is to pay a little for a good guide who knows the best shoreline spots and tactics.
forget the freshwater. you have better fishing in Kentucky. my first day on the pier was spent watching and asking questions. the locals are more than helpful if you are willing to listen. we got our licenses at the pier. just a warning, the pier fishing about ruined the freshwater fishing for me.
+1 on getting license on line! The last two times we tried to get license at the pier, their system was down and we ended up getting it over the phone.
