Im looking for about a 17lb outfit for kings and i think either a penn battle or conflict 6000 would be good. The battle is cheaper and I've heard its a good reel but i don't know about the conflict. I know it has a bit more line capacity and drag and 1 more bearing so it sounds like a better reel but I'm not sure its worth it if the battle will do about the same

Odds are you will never tighten the drag beyond 5 pounds for #17 king fishing so I wouldn't worry about that top end at all. I have been using a couple of Battles on my charters and have been pleased with them for the price point. Sure the Conflict will be a little more deluxe, but I doubt you will ever find yourself saying "if only I had a more expensive reel in my hand, I would've caught that fish."
All manufacturers put up erroneous numbers in regard to their reels' capacities. I'd be willing to bet that the actual capacities of Battles and Conflicts of the same size are nearly identical. More drag is meaningless when it comes to kings, just as Pierless said. Counting bearings can be a good indicator of quality, but it can also be misleading if you don't account for the bearings' locations.Quote:

Penn really lost me when they went with a bushing on the line roller instead of a bearing on the Conflict and then promote the serviceable handle bearing that does not improve the fish-fighting performance of the reel . The Conflict has a 3 washer drag system as opposed to the 5 in the Battle, but the diameter of the HT-100 washers is larger just like the old Slammer line. The Battle has proven to be a tough little reel for its price-point and the 6000 size is available for less than $90 if you shop around a little bit. In my eyes, Penn isn't offering up much for the extra $40-50 that you pay for the Conflict.

There is also a 704z gold spool i might be able to get for 65. Any suggestions on that? its in pretty good condition
