Hello my name is Marty been visiting GS/OB area for long time now about 14 years. Someday soon my wife and I hope to be permit residents. I've done the inshore and offshore fishing and enjoy it very much. But my last couple times there I tired the pier fishing and it was awesome for the most part I just watch and learn, still a lot to learn. My Q is each season rewards are different what are your favorites and why?
Welcome to the forum. This is the place for more info than the brain can digest. When you said "Buckeye needs help" I thought you might be the Browns owner looking for a head coach!!! Grew up one block off Lake Erie. Blessed by God with a transfer to Nashville in 85. Fishing help....Pier#r is the name to know. Been fishing the pier for several years but on my Christmas list this year was a day with the man...(#r, I need to reserve Monday May 12th in the AM for "Skinny Water" lesson). Enjoy the many responses you will receive.
Oh, my favorite season...May and Sept...Just before and after room rates go through the roof. Plus the fishing ain't bad either!!!
PS...your in SEC country....ix nay on the uckeye bay thing! It will only bring grief...trust me, I know!!!

Welcome to the forum.
I fish year round and must say EVERY month has its favorites for me.
January: it feels good just to catch a mess of fish...
Whiting will do nicely, they are fun on light tackle and eat great ;-)
February: getting a little warmer and practicing for sheepshead.
March: sheepshead in 'full bloom' along with early spanish mackerel for a 'change of pace' fishing.
April: spring is sprung with spanish & king mackerel, pompano and speckled trout.
May: wide open fishing for just about anything (the lighter tackle the better IMHO ;-)
June: summer fun with mackerels and whatever else wants to come by and play.
July: tarpon roll by...
August: bull reds and jack crevelle along with just about anything else
September: late summer fun with pelagics and resident fish while trying to reason with hurricane season
October: the fall 'fatten up' time for mackerels
November: bull red mania and whiting galore
December: whiting and sheepshead make the transition to winter more tolerable
I had a blast in November with all the big whiting, croakers, and a good number of drum. I always came home with a full ice chest and I still have fillets in the freezer. It was a great time to fish with my son when the whiting were on fire.
October was great to. We caught tons of slot reds in the shallows.
I like all three seasons: Fishing Season, Duck Hunting Season and Auburn Football Season, the latter which overlaps with the other two seasons.
Buckeye, this type of info is why so many people get in line to spend a few hours learning from a pro like Pier#r. If you want to catch fish and learn how to catch them time and time again, definately hire him. The only thing is you shouldn't hire him for the afternoon of April 25th. I will agree as of right now SEC rules and believe me I love to watch Alabama football. But it only took a Big Ten guy "Saban" to get LSU and Bama on the winning track! But that's another story. I have learned a lot over the past several years by trial and error coming down to fish the surf and pier. I would be dollars ahead had I hired Mr. Thornton (Pier#r)for a few hours a long time ago. If you've ever fished right next to someone who was catching 10 to your one on the same lure he's that guy. Hit him up in advance and he can tell you what to bring or what to get from J&M when you get down here.

Chill, thanks for the tips and on how I get in touch with Mr Thompson I've been to J&M its like a freaking candy store! Have a future brother-law who told me what I need to buy... I'm sure most of it was true but I would rather hear it from local expert know what I mean. This Ohio weather is killing everything! i just kept thinking of that wonderful week in June my wife and girls on the beach and my ass on that pier All Day long!!
Yep, Ohio has been cold for sure....I can't ever remember this cold for many, many years....going to hate to see and pay the heating bills this winter :bang

Yeah its been ice and snow here all day. Been a long time since we have had any and I hope its even longer the next time.
Subzero wind chills persist in Illinois. Stops long enough to snow, then resumes. :rain
It's cold down here too. I had to put on socks with my Crocks :cool:
It was sleeting the whole drive home from work from Mobile to Foley. I'm over this arctic whatever they're calling it now...

Heat wave here its 25 right now! Don't care how warm it gets here I'm still gonna move down there someday and rub elbows and bend poles! If anyone knows a plastic mold injection jobs available give a yell!
It's called a polar vortex. They used to be Alberta Clippers. 6 degrees is cold for Alabama.
At least in the north, we have insulated homes. I feel sorry for a lot of folks down there with poorly insulated homes combined with the propane shortage.
Yesterday the average temperature in Alaska was 2 degrees higher than the average temperature in the U.S. (44 vs 44)! Temps are 30 degrees above normal for this time of year in Alaska.
YOU WILL NOT FIND A GREATER GROUP OF PEOPLE TO FISH WITH than on the pier in Gulf shores. As you age you might find it less attractive to go for the glory fish and fight the crowds at the end of the pier. THERE ARE GREAT EATING FISH OPTIONS IN THE MID AND SHALLOWS. I personally eat fish 4 or 5 times a week and enjoy the great variety available on the pier. By properly freezing them you can stock up on the current species that are plentiful and enjoy them thruout the year. My heart doctor estimated I might have 1 to 3 years and that was in 1991. Eat lots of fish and live longer than you might think.
We insulate here for summer the construction methods and insulation are the same to keep a house warm or cool...
Most homes down here have at least R19 in the walls and thicker in attics. The heat and humidity in Alabama is like a sauna in July and August. There is usually at least a light breeze near the coast that offers a little relief if you are outdoors but just a few miles inland it gets toasty.Quote:
