Thank you guys so much for all the great information. This will be a big help.
Just one more question though.
What kind of leader should I use?

Like so many things, there's a trade-off. You will get fewer bites with a steel leader, but without one you will get fewer blues or sharks.
In the surf zone or trough, for good eating fish (whiting, specks, and pomps), I would use a very light leader (10 lb or less) as you will not have many bites from toothy fishes. If you are targeting bull reds or Spanish go for 20-50 lb mono. Steel for sharks or blues, but not the pre-made, store-bought kind.People are shocked to see sharks in the water around here.
If you see natural water taste it. If it's salty it has sharks in it. If it's fresh it has alligators in it. If it's brackish it has both.
