As I mentioned in an earlier post, my family will be down the first week of October. I really want to fish the Dixey Bar one morning, but I will be doing so from the beach. Is it really worth the hike out there and what might be the best choice for bait or lures? Thanks
With live or cut fish bait on medium heavy or heavy gear (20#+ line) you can EXPECT bullreds, sharks, jack crevelle, bull drum and stingrays.
On lighter gear (with shrimp pieces) you can target whiting, pompano, slot reds, etc.
You can also carry a 7'-8' rod 8#-12# class combo with a lure tied on 3/4 to one ounce spoon, sinking hardbait, etc. for speckled seatrout, bluefish, spanish mackerel, etc.
It IS a hike - pack light. Bare minimum in the cart.
Park at the office and pay the fee - it cuts off a good bit of the pull.
October is go time on the bar - It's possible you will park on top of a school of hungry bulls and get tired of catching them. Can't say wether you will catch anything or not - but it's a sure thing you won't if you don't go...just sayin'

Some of the best flounder ever caught by us was at
the Point there, with bull minnows, 6#-8# mono. Would hike there again and again. If only I was able.

All caught from the beach of Ft. Morgan on the Bay side and right on the Point.
Fall and Winter is the best time of the year for fishing here, and the summer heat won't try to kill you.
Dixie Bar is fantastic surf fishing.
On the Bay side is a steep drop off, usually within 25 yards of the shore, prime for many species.
Crack of dawn topwater action here can be intense, so can the Flounder.
The usually extensive shallows between Dixie Bar the Point and eastward is great for many such as, Puppy Drum and Whiting.
Come to the Point between Oct-Jan and there are often hordes of Bull Reds and Big Black Drum, and they're hungry, toss a fat shrimp, cut mullet or half a crab and hold on tight.
Great sharking year'round too.

The Bay side and the Point/Dixie Bar are outlined, the Yellow is my favorite area.
I have two vacations scheduled for this fall and both revolve around fishing the Bar. One I October and the other in November. I personally can't speak about this time of year, but the fall rocks on the bar. Just so you know if you do decide to fish it in the fall bring the absolute strongest bug repellent you can afford. When the winds out of he north the £^*#€\!{ black flies are no joke.

North wind means flies/skeeters on the beach and you'll want long sleeves/pants and serious DEET.

What kind of leader should I use?
Like so many things, there's a trade-off. You will get fewer bites with a steel leader, but without one you will get fewer blues or sharks.Quote:

Lots of forums hav info BUT none compares with this one IMHO - I hav consistently found advice given here to be trustworthy- that's why I check it everyday- hoping to get back in September!!!
