The crappie fishing on Lake Guntersville has been pretty sketchy the last 10 days or so, but the bycatch has begun to improve.
These drum are moving into the creeks, and have been testing our crappie poles, checking out our knots and drag. Harvested 2 small ones for us, the others get C&R.
To they fillet out like redfish? How do you cook them?

Yeah, fillet and skin, cut out rib bones and slice fillets, batter and deep fry. Used to scale and eviscerate and grill whole, then I got married, and Carolyn can't bring herself to eat fish with bone-in.Quote:

Yeah, they are, but fighting them in gets old after the first couple of times, on 4# mono. My personal record for 4# mono is a 24 lb. drum, took 45 min. Bass aren't near as hard to land as the big drum are.Quote:

Not trying to one up anyone, Mr. #r, but I caught that drum below Guntersville Dam, while the turbines were running, from the bank, on a 3 piece Daiwa combo that broke down and fit in a plastic case you could put in your pocket. He was landed about a thousand feet down stream from where he bit.
Fishing when turbines are running can be harder than fishing in a strong surf . Everything is swept down stream . Will pull an anchored boat under if you do not cut the anchor line in time.

Your last comment tweaked my memory back a few decades to fishing the pier one day next to John Dotson (RIP).
We were having a pretty good day with nice spanish mackerel using small LYs on light tackle and John hooked a nice king which he landed after some effort (especially due to age and size).
Well he was sopping up the accolades when one gent told him "You sure a good fisherman."
John laughed and told him "Friend, I'd rather be lucky than good any day."
That still holds true ;-)
