I obviously saltwater fish predominately now due to living on the coast. But this time of year I miss fishing for Crappie too. I'm not familiar at all about the fresh water fishing available in south Alabama and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about where the best crappie fishing might be??
I've always heard the area around Dead Lake (Creola) was good and Bay Minette (from the 225 up to creek).
And Big Creek Lake has some beauties.

My crappie poles have not left the shed much since i moved down from Prattville in 97. I used to fish the Alabama River out of Cooters Pond Access and up on Lake Jordan and always did well.
That said, I hear if you find the right slough in the upper Delta, you can do well. And like noted, Big Creek Lake has gooduns' but be prepared to fish gin clear water.
Miller's Ferry and Gees' Bend is probably the best crappie fishing within a reasonable drive. Back in the late 80s/90s, we'd caught some real slobs around Gees Bend, 16-18" er's!!!
Only place I've ever had luck fishing for them is in Dead Lake...just look for any type of brush rising out of the water and drop a perch minnow down. It's been several years since I've really gotten into them (not because they aren't there, but because I got into bass fishing). You're liable to bring up some NICE bream also, especially closer to spawning time. One day back in the early to mid 90s, my brother and I got into them and had about 25 bream and probably 30 white perch in about 2 hours of fishing...all within sight of the launch at Dead Lake Marina.Quote:
