There will be some pompano around in the fall, in the time period you specified. They hang around year-round, really, but in the heat of the summer they really only bite early in the morning. September and October is when the water begins to cool down and they will be plentiful again.
There will likely be plenty of 'young-of-the-year' pompano in the surf through the fall.
Typically they will be just under legal size until November when the numbers really thin out.
I was digging through some pics and found this one from last September. I caught these fish on the 29th of September, 2012, from the surf. Dave is right that sometimes they are smaller in the fall, but these were solid two-pounders. I believe that some of our pompano live here year-round, and migrate north-south rather than east-west. They stay in deeper water where it is cooler through the summer months, only foraying into the shallows early in the morning and late in the evening. When the water cools into the 70's and 60's they spend more time in the shallower water. This means you can catch them into the fall and even through the winter. Good luck. The pompano is one of my favorite fish to catch.
