first autumn trip, a couple questions

been a spring breaker since 85' and will be coming down mid october for our first fall trip(no kids). i have read alot of the past october threads of whats biting but its almost all pier reports, i also purchased bob shipps fishes of the gulf and there is some info of best months to catch certain species, i understand weather is key along with water temps. im a typical meat soaker and do well. i am a 3am surf rat looking for that bull red and it appears that i may be up against more sharks in october if i read the historical data. is this a correct assumtion? also, will it be a good assessment of being able see some shoreline feeding frenzies where one could cast a silver spoon or suspension bait for ladies or blues or even spanish? thanks in advance

For me, October is one of the better months for inshore fishing. Usually, flounder are plentiful in and around the passes and can be caught on finger mullet, killifish, live shrimp, gulp on a jighead, and soft plastics. The evenings along the eastern shore of the pass at Alabama point will get you bull reds on cut mullet. I am sure you can catch them off of the wall on the west side as well, we just always fished for them off of the beach, which makes it easier to land and release them. Croaker are also plentiful in the same areas we catch flounder, and we have done well with white trout as well.

We also do well in the surf for reds, blues, and flounder in October.

I catch a lot of spanish, reds, blues, and ladyfish in the surf in October on a silver spoon. Frequently see sharks in the surf but have never been sharked, nothing like at the pier. Also a lot of Pompano on fresh shrimp/fishbites.

I second that emotion! I'll be another old river-rat converting to a pier/jetty/surf-rat for a week in October. Can't pass up Fort Morgan either. (got married on the beach there. Have to return to the scene of the crime! <chuckle> )
