First Trip to GS/OB

Hey all..I've been lurking the site for a while now and finally joined. I will be making my first trip to Gulf Shores the second week of August. Aside from fishing are there any must sees that you would recommend? I know there is not a shortage of Oyster bars but are there any smaller "mom and pop" type establishments that you would recommend. I usually like to try and find a place that isn't necessarily overrun by tourists..even though I am one!
We will be staying at the Pheonix ? I know I'll have to fish early to avoid the swimmers. I'll be hitting up the pier and possibly the jetties at the pass. One question..is it possible to get to the end of the jettie on the east side of the pass? It looks like there is water between it and the sand from looking at imagery. This is the main thing I can't seem to find in my searches of the archives.
Looking to possibly meet some of you on the pier. Happy fishing...thanks for any responses!

Too deep to wade (I've tried). You'd have to have a raft to hold your gear and I doubt it's worth it. The jetties are pretty treacherous footing in general. I've seen people snorkeling it, which looks interesting.

The gap is a concrete weir, placed there for increased channel width in storms (protects the jetty by giving the high water someplace to go). I wouldn't try to walk the weir.

I just got back from GS about 2 weeks ago, also my 1st time. It seems like the best time to fish anywhere, is in the morning, before dawn and a couple hrs. after. I mostly fished at Perdido pass next to the seawall behind The Gulf restaurant. I was throwing a silver Gotcha and had a lot of pullage with that. Also used some fresh dead shrimp and caught lots of smaller fish to keep it interesting. The surf was dead when I was there....the most action I saw was at the Pass at Little Lagoon. Tips: The Winn-Dixie on Rt. 59 was a great place for groceries, if you like fresh seafood go over to Bon Secour (Safe Harbor seafood) a lot less expensive than anywhere in town. Pizza is very good at Crico's on rt.59. We all had a blast and I hope you do too.

+1 on Crico's Pizza. It is awesome and they will deliver to the pier.
