Fishing rod/reel setup
I am going out next week a few times and we are looking to target Spanish. It seems like they have been running small lately. I was thinking about downsizing to a medium light 6’6” with a 3000 size reel with 8lb mono. My buddy thinks I’m going too light. Thoughts???

I use a 6'6" ML with a Shimano TX 2000 and 6# mono for jigging ;-)

Some of the old timers tell me they used 6lb mono before the sharks were such a problem. You will get more casting distance and faster sink rate with lighter line and possibly more bites if the water is really clear.

I often use a 6'6" rod with a 2500 with 8#, especially throwing spec rigs or loonie's. So I think you are fine.

+1 on the advice from 'r and CarlF - light is right. my main rig for years has been a 6 footer, 1000 size shimano w/8# ande premium clear... has been/still is a perfect setup for me - tried a couple 7's, prefer the 6'... don't really chase the macs, prefer up shallow, jiggin' for flatties, especially at night... the rig you describe should work fine, just be sure to use good mono, either ande or momoi... good luck, keep yer tip up...

Remember, if you get a 3 to 4lb Spanish on you have to keep him out of the pilings and fight him below the pier. If they are running small no problem but a 4lb Spanish will require playing the fish for a while. Will be fun anyway.
