I'm bringing my family down to Gulf Shores for spring break. (March 29-April 6) I have fished in the fall down at the pass and caught some nice Redfish, Black Drum, and Spanish... What can we expect during this time in the surf? I'm also looking at taking the fam on an in-shore fishing trip... is there anyone that you all would recommend? We are a family of 4... I know it can get expensive, not trying to break the bank. Any help would be appreciated!

I've never taken an inshore charter. I'm sure others can recommend. Spanish might be running small but plentiful on the pier. For the surf I would go for whiting and pompano.

We caught quite a few spanish in the surf last fall... I have yet to catch a keeper pompano. We caught a bunch of 4-6" ones.

I have used Pierless for offshore, and we had a awesome trip. He was great guy, fun to be with, worked hard to get us on the fish, and he comes from long line of family fishing.

Ive seen years when kings showed up as early as the last week of March, so whats biting just depends on how the rest of this winter goes. If it stays cold, then might be whiting/pompano/sheepshead time, or you could get into the Spanish.
I usually do great on the pier with sheepshead during the last week of March into the first week of April. There's typically (depending on the weather/water temps, of course) a good run of Spanish Mackerel. Sometimes I'll fish for whiting, pompano, and slot reds in the skinny water at that time. It's one of my favorite times to fish!
Agree, fishing on the pier can be pretty good then, and the kids don't get seasick.
Lots of my customers seem particularly worried about kids getting seasick. They don't get sick at a higher rate than adults, and honestly, they usually seem to tough it out as well or better. Several of my youngest customers have become super enthusiastic regulars -- sometimes even leaving the parents back at the condo! For anyone who takes their little ones out, my main advice is don't constantly pester them about it (hey are you feeling ok? are you sure? look at the horizon etc). If it is a major worry or you know the child is prone to carsick or other motion sickness, take a dose of non drowsy seasick meds well before the trip as indicated on the directions.Quote:

I have taken a non-drowsy motion sickness med that I think is named Bonine (sp?) with good results. It is sold at Walgreen's among other places I'm sure.
Also, I've fished with JayHook and hope to again some day. Be prepared to catch fish.
I don't know if I am the exception but Bonine (active ingredient Meclizine) knocks me out. Worse than Benadryl. I work a swing shift and after working off in the morning I take one tablet abut 2pm, shortly after I wake up. It takes some time to kick in but usually by 9pm I'm a zombie until about 9 the next morning. Last year I took one the night before and one the morning of a 6hr charter. I didn't get sick but I slept the whole way back in and the rest of the afternoon when I got back to the condo. I may try the wrist bands if I ever go back out.Quote:

I learned long ago that it's best to go really easy on the alcohol the night before. Ain't much worse than a hangover on a boat, but even just a little tiny bit of a fuzzy head in the morning can make you miserable later on a boat.
More than once I've had to take my boat in because one of the guys had too much the night before and I have seen some plain miserable young folks on a party boat.
