Hey guys new to the forum but have been going to fort morgan for a few years now. I just wanted to check in and see if anyone has been fishing the surf around fort morgan and the beach houses nearby (gulfside) and see how the fishing is. Ill be down friday!

The weather was pretty rough Sunday-Tuesday, with Tuesday being an improvement. Today the weather is fine and people think it will be ok going forward. So far the only things we have caught out front surf fishing in the gulf have been catfish. Guy that lives in the house next door that we have become friends with over the years says it needs 2-3 days to clear up and then pompano and specs and spanish can be caught again. Just getting bait & weight to hold bottom was almost impossible Sunday and Monday. Today we took a charter out past the rigs and limited out on snapper in about 30 minutes. Then we trolled between rigs and caught 1 kind and 2 spanish. Drifted the Dixie Bar with no luck (and didn't see any other boats having luck). Also a healthy bit of seaweed as a result of so much churning with the waves. Hopefully that settles down.
Go to J&M and get a few Sputnix weights for use in that rough surf. A 2oz sputnix will hold like a 5oz pyramid. A little pricy but they work.
What Charter do you use to go out to the rigs in the bay and is it walk on. I will be there in about 2 weeks. Thanks
Surf fishing Ft. Morgan the last 2 mornings I have landed 5 redfish all on dead sand fleas I gathered up the night before.
Any of that green slimy grass that way Tex? It's starting to give the people close to Little Lagoon Pass fits.
No slimy stuff, but seaweed can be issues. Catching all the reds in the 1st cut so really no problem.
No luck this morning at the Ft. Morgan surf. Calm water and a few people swimming close by. Lots of bait fish are jumping just beyond the 1st sandbar.
Is the pier at Ft. Morgan closed yet

No never give up. Out there this morning at 6:45am with about a dozen sand fleas. 1st catch was a 18" at 7:10, then two 15" ers and last last was another 18" on my last sand flea at 8:30. All caught in the 1st cut in 2-3 ft.water. water very calm and clear. No seaweed.
Nice bite this morning between 7:30 -9:30. Total 8 reds 5 keepers. All on sand fleas which were difficult to find last night. Added to the catch are 2 whiting caught on ghost shrimp.

Y'all have a GREAT looking spot for calm water fishing.
Plenty of relief on the bottom between those sandbars!
That is the type of structure to look for along the beach.
And you have been using the right bait.
Been here since Saturday and we've caught 2 small sharks and 2 hardheaded. Beach where we are seems really flat for a long ways out. We have used cut bait and ghost shrimp. Guy next to us caught a pomp yesterday. I just don't know where to put my bait. So far pretty disappointed. Plus hotter than two blue blazes.

Thanks, yeah been going back to the same spot for 5 days now and only been shut out once. Yeah nice deep cuts before the 1st sandbar and chanels nearby. My only problem is the sand fleas are difficult to find.I spent 3 hrs last night and found only 15, and 4 of those are the pinching ones. Does anyone know where I could find lots of sand fleas?
Try to avoid areas that have been walked on recently.
Sandfleas don't appreciate being trampled by beach walkers ;-)
I caught several today that I dislodged while slurping ghost shrimp. I just watched them bury up in the sand and grabbed them before the next wave came through and stirred up the sand. They were waaaaay off the beach. LATE this evening I finally saw some in groups with their antennas stuck out of the water in the edge of the surf and was able to catch several. I also discovered that hardhead catfish and hard tails will eat sand fleas. I'm hoping they will work tonight or in the morning for something more desirable.
My brother in law and I caught our limit of pompano this morning. Looking to hook up with something bigger if anyone has any tips? We are using the fish bites shrimp flavor on a pompano rig. Thinking about getting some live bait for this evening. Is it worth the hike to go to dixey bar?
Yes it is. It is a walk. Just remember dont park inside the gate otherwise you will be locked in. Use both live shrimp and croaker if they have them available. The pines has croaker.

Catch your limit(s) of Pompano again and I'll swap you a fair-sized Red.
I'm not looking to catch one just to eat. I want to catch it for the fight.
Quick question. We have been catching croaker this morning. Should we keep those and try them for bait to use this evening? Will anything take a live croaker?
worth a shot. May catch trout, reds, Rays, sharks depending on size.
The biggest trout I have ever caught have been on big croakers. Sometimes I wasn't even sure how the speck could eat the croaker.

Sad day, the place had been pretty bad for quite some time though. Still a good place to launch a boat or kayak though. There's also still plenty of good spots for surf fishing if you know how to read the sand bars and the conditions are right.Quote:
