Ft morgan surf

Hey guys I'm a new member on the site. I'm also new to saltwater fishing. I've been reading old threads for about two weeks now. I've also been studying on how to read the waves to find good spots to fish. I'm coming down the 6/30 through 7/8 and I'm hoping to catch flounder, reds, and whiting from the surf. We rented a house in ft morgan on Ponce De Leon ct, its in the same block as Reeds Real Estate, if that helps you know where I'm staying. I was wanting to know how the fishing is in that area, how close is the sandbar, are there any good throughs/cut. Also are there any sand fleas or ghost shrimp in that area. I'm bringing my 2 kids with me, they are 7 and 9, and they want to catch crabs so if you can tell me a good place to go that would be great as well. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Catfish king and welcome to the Forum. Your vacation location is a very good place for surf fishing, though I can not advise on the availability of troughs or cuts. It has been a few years since we have fished that area, so you will know before us. Your target species should be there, plus pompano. Your biggest concerns should be the number of swimmers in the surf, so get out early, before coffee early, if it is loaded with visitors. Use live or fresh dead shrimp, not ever frozen. Skip using squid altogether. Fish Bites are a good artificial additive for surf fishing. Sand fleas and ghost shrimp are likely in the area if the are not run off by heavy traffic in the surf. There is a Fresh Market Seafood about 4.5 miles from Hwy. 59 that nave fresh bait shrimp, and Gulf Shores marina a mile west of Ponce may have live shrimp. Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression the the pompano would be few and far between in july. I'm glad to here that they may still be around. When fishing for them do you prefer the rigs with the little floats on the hook it just a double drop with a #2 hook.

We make our own double drop pompano rigs using fluorocarbon leaders and #4 and #2 kahle or circle hooks, with a pyramid weight. First drop about 12 in. long and second drop 18 in. long. I once thought pompano were only seasonal, but they can be caught year round. Yippee!

Call ahead but both fort Morgan marina or the pines should have live bait shrimp or minnows. The sandbar a couple of weeks ago was 50 yards out with a good drop off at that location. Like bodebum said post them if you catch them.

Has anyone used the gulp sand fleas if so how did you rig them?

Yes, Catfish keep us posted on your catch. We will be down 7/16 through 7/23 and staying 300yds east of Little Lagoon Pass. I hope the surf fishing is good in that area. If anyone is familiar with that area of surf let me know.

Catfish - we stayed near that area last year and had excellent luck with pompano on fresh dead shrimp. Waded out to first sandbar (the trough between was up to my waste maybe a bit higher) and casted out from there. We typically were able to move up or down the beach to avoid swimmers, but it was a little earlier in the year so not as crowded. Like bodebum said - get your fresh shrimp at the seafood market and your live shrimp at the marina.
