I just thought that you would like to know the The Fly Fisherman Magazine selected ALABAMA #1 in the top ten states for temperate bass, followed by Ar., Ga., Ks., Ky., Mo., So. Car., Ok., Tn. & TX. Most of AL. temperate bass are caught out of the Lewis Smith, Weiss and Martin Lakes and the Coosa River system. Do these guys know what they are talking about?
I always knew bass (like any other fish) could be temperamental, finicky, stubborn, etc...
But I never heard of them as being "temperate" :confused: ;-)
Those are great fishing lakes though!
According to the Fly Fisherman Magazine, the 5 Temperates are the Striped, the White Perch, the White Bass, Yellow Bass and the Hybrid Bass, which is a cross between a female striper and a male white bass.Quote:

I can't say anything about Alabama, but I can confirm that the temperate bass fishing is very good in Missouri. I've only managed to catch small ones so far, but they are prone to making big runs when they get bigger. Also, walleye apparently love to feast on the little ones from what I've heard.
Also, apparently hybrids can't reproduce on their own in a lot of cases. The eggs and sperm are all very weak, making them functionally sterile. A lot of the ones caught in rivers around St. Louis are escapees from stocked reservoirs (I think a couple rivers that run into the Mississippi are stocked, too, in other places).
I have a son and family that live in Fenton, a suburb of St. Louis, on the Marimac River, (sp.?), He fly fishes bass out of a yak and has a great time doing it. I have caught Northern, Walleye & Bass on the fly rod but I usually target trout.Quote:

Alabama holds the world record landlocked Saltwater Striped bass at 69lbs 9oz. caught from the Black Warrior River on Feb. 28th, 2013. The previous world record smallmouth bass was caught in the Wheeler Dam tailrace 10lbs 8oz. The state record spotted bass was caught from Smith Lake is 8lbs 15oz. which is only 9oz. shy of the world record. I'm not sure the origins of our hybrids but they are numerous in the tailraces of the Tennessee River Dams. Yellow and White bass are usually small and very plentiful. I have no clue about the white perch.
I would guess that they know what they are talking about then. It's a good magazine and they usually know what they are talking about, but like most fishermen they have a tendency to embellish at times.Quote:
