Rod Recommendations
I need advice for buying a rod for King/Cobia fishing. My wife and I only get to fish on the pier one or two weeks a year so I can't justify spending a lot of money, but I don't want to buy something so cheap that I won't be satisfied. We mostly fish for flounder and I have rods and reels that work fine for that. I have a Shimano Socorro 8000 that I want a rod for to use for Kings and Cobia. I know that there are specialized rods for each species but I can only afford one. Any advice?

Re: Rod Recommendations
First of all forget about targeting cobia with that reel but for kings you will be fine as long as you put a couple hundreds yards of 20lb braid baking and a 100+yds of 15lb mono on top.As for rods,a Sea Striker Beach Runner BR1220s80ct is the best bang for the buck,$55.

Thanks John! I assume you keep these in stock at J&M? If so, I will stop in when we come down for Memorial day week.

The man has spoken. any of this mans advice shouldn't be taken for granted. He wont steer you wrong. swing by J&M and will set you up.
Give a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years
Come November, there's some really fun and productive fishing in store for the pier fisherman. One of my favorites is the whiting a hard-pulling, great eating fish and when the schools are in, you...
