Gulf Shores/Orange Beach Kayak Fishing

Hello all,

This board is the closest thing to a kayak fishing board I could find for the Alabama Gulf Coast area, and after browsing past threads I found that some of you are quite knowledgeable about kayak fishing in the area.

I'm coming to Orange Beach on vacation from May 8th (Monday) - May 14th (Sunday). Forecasts show great fishing conditions for this upcoming week (spring tide, full moon) and the gulf shores fishing blog is predicting a speckled trout and redfish bite. All of these factors led to my decision to bring my 12 foot Perception Pescador kayak.

Where should I launch and where should I fish to target Trout and Reds? I have a couple of medium action 7' bass rods that I plan to fish with using about 15 lb mono. What kind of lures should I use?

Also, the seas are supposed to be very calm this week, so I might try to fish off the beach some. What is some general advice for that? Should I troll for Spanish or go for something bigger?

I like about 4-5 ft length under my cork.

Little Lagoon can and has produced very well. You can launch at the ramp a couple miles down Ft. Morgan road or at the Little Lagoon Pass. Fish docks and drop offs, and especially docks with drop offs/holes. Also the sand bars outer edges and flats produce very well, just drift the shrimp across an drop and occasionally pop. Use the wind to your advantage. Make sure not to kill the shrimp when hooking the bait.

If you enjoy artificial, Berkley Gulp 3" shrimp in New Penny on a 1/4" oz jighead and flouro leader bounced on the bottom in the same places work extremely well.

Redfish at Cotton Bayou didn' t happen, caught 2 trout, hooked 2 that I ennever saw. Lots of catfish until I tired of them. However, I got to do a trip I often thought about, floating with the porpoises, and goint to Tacky Jacks for breakfast by kayak, even saw a sea turtle. Packed up and went to Little Lagoon, 4 specks, a drum, a snapper of some sort and the usual croakers, some pretty nice. Leaving now, leaning toward LL again in the morn.

Been doing this kayak thing since 2006, just progressed a bit. I paddled for along time, Mirage Drive is sweet. Gonna give a shout out about the local Hobie dealer, Fairhope Boat Co, they can fix u up. Went up there Friday, nice folks, nice shop.
