Flounder'll eat the skrimps. Been told you can catch specks on them but never tried. I know a bunch of guy in Louisiana that catch reds on them inshore hand over fist. I don't think they work as well as live but when pin fish are killing your live bait before your line gets tight, well you get the picture. Also makes for a change of diet if they are being finicky.
From the pier the only thing I can get to eat them are flounder. Inshore fishing on the other hand, speckled trout, white trout, redfish, and flounder love them. Best luck is on a 1/8-1/4oz jig head bounced off bottom around structure yields flounder and the occasional other species whille puttin it on a worm hook and use it on a popping cork will yield the other varieties.
where do you guys fish inshore, do any of yall fish in the lagoon? I want to find a good inshore spot to kayak fish.
Thanks for the tips guys!
Little Lagoon and Cotton Bayou are two of your best bets.

[/quote] thanks man, ill probably go on an inshore fishing trip to little lagoon in a few months, Is there any chance of catchin reds?
Always. Check out my buddy Captain Ron Stone's page:

He does daytime trips as well. Great guy to fish with. Tel him Justin sent you. He just started up his charter and I am shooting some business his way.
I personally despise gulps , there are far better plastics IMHO
I'll probably wind up using live bait, but what would you recommend instead of gulp for artificial Peaches?
I like the saltwater assassin plastics, but y favorites are soft freshwater swim baits

I've had very good sucess with the 3" Gulp Shrimp on flounder, redfish, white trout, black drum, ladyfish and (to a lesser degree) speckled trout, ground mullet, whiting and pompano.
Mostly the New penny color on a 1/4 ounce jighead.
This summer I experimented with the 2" Gulp Shrimp on a 1/8 ounce jig head to target whiting and was moderately sucessful.
Had a HUGE bycatch though :-\
And this year they all seemed to be 'softer' and tore more easily >:(
Anyway artificials seldom compare to live shrimp under 'ideal' fishing conditions but IMHO they are a great substitute and work well even in dingy water. :headbang:
And like Peaches I often prefer those plastic swim baits ;-)
Too much information has been givin in this thread, can't have anyone finding out my secret bait,

Fwiw....The kietech swing impact line is the best swimbait I have tried. Both it and the fat impact have a strong squid scent. When I need a bait that gives a "thump" rather than a wiggle, its the go to bait for me.
Thanks for all the great info guys! Peaches, since this will be my first time Pier/Surf fishing, I'm pretty sure your secrets (and the fish) will be safe! LOL!
I've caught nice Bull Red's inshore, flounder at the pass, and specs like them too! I use them all the time and love them! Nuclear Chicken and New Penny colors work well for flounder!
Thanks Reid!
I had more success using 3X Redfish Magic by Strike king than using any other soft plastic. They are super tough, come in a lot of different colors. Use them with a 1/8 oz "bait holder" style jighead. I will give you that much, colors are my secret haha. :fishing:
they work great for just about anything, they were all i flounder fished with for years, and during season, you cant keep the trout off them :fishing:, though you only can catch about 2-4 trout max on one, the trout shred'em, and only 1-3 flounder on them, you normally dont get tham back from flounder

Thanks again for all the great tips guys!
Now, you folks are the the sportsmen we think of, when we think of sportsmen. This is the most different forum I've ever seen. As long as someones catching, it's all good.
I use tiny slivers cut off of the gulp shrimp to tip sabiki rigs to catch pinfish for bait. Works great and they have a hard time getting the rubbery gulp bait without getting caught.
Redfish Majic make flounder go boom
I agree with bodebum, wish everyone was as willing to offer advice as all you guys have.
