I picked up a senator 9/0 and need to put some line on it. Main use would be for shark. From land and or a boat. Should I use braid or mono, or both. What pound test is best. Any help would be great.
Thanks johnk

Read this post Dutch wrote last week

Thanks I did read what Dutch wrote. Then I followed up with my reason for the 9/0 reel. Maybe I will never use it at the beach, but it's what I wanted for my collection of fishing gear. So I got it and now I need to put some line on it.
Straight 60lb Berkley Big Game mono in either clear or low-vis green. Keep it simple and pack it tight. I use a short topshot of 80# mono on my mid size reels for abrasion resistance for rubbing against the sand-only about 30yds worth. I know a lot of guys who run straight 50 or 60 all the way to the leader with no issues on that reel.
I had my 9/0 spooled at J&M.
Laid down 3-4 layers of 50# mono for a backing, then put 600 yards of Jerry Brown Line hollow core 130# atop that, spliced that onto and topped it off with 130 yards of Momoi Diamond 80# mono.
80# should offer decent abrasion resistance for where I fish most often, as there is not a lot of shell on the bars.
Next time I'll use 100# mono for the topshot, I want the topshot to break before the mainline.
It now sits on a new Penn International VS5010TS60, 6', 50-100#, awaiting warmer water an big sharks.
I just had my 6/0 respooled for the season too.
Mono to Mono, 375 yards of 50#, topped with 150 yards of 80#.
I don't mind as much if the mono mainline breaks as it is cheap, and the JB braid is expensive.
Again, the 80# for abrasion resistance.
If we were further down in Florida, with a lot of shell on the bars, then I'd use 100-150# mono topshots.
My bad, John. Didn't notice you were OP on that thread.
