try to use the 750 on jacks if your 706 is an older one, im not saying by any stretch that it cant handle them, but some old 706s tent to not like fighting jacks, so just fyi, i would hate to see you mess up your 706
Iv grooved van staal
rollers on jacks.. But then again I like to put a little pressure on em
Where did you fish out of Peaches?
Regarding using 706s for jacks, just don't put the line overly tight on the spool. Don't crank the handle all out with a tight drag. Let the rod do the work and put the line on gently. We've used 706s for crevalle, tarpon, amberjack, 40 lb dolphin, blackfin tuna, whatever. It isn't about the fish on the other side, it is about how you use the reel.
And I know this has been beaten to death, but you use a 706 because it sounds cool and is stylish. If you want to dominate fish on tight drag buy a modern (not necessarily expensive) reel.
I've been thinking about gettting a zeebaas, J&M is stocking them, the only bad thing I've heard about them is the odd drag knob
While a reel that price should last forever, you can also make a reel that costs 20% as much last almost forever.
I don't use a 706Z because it is stylish. I use it because of the manual bail. There is nothing like a manual bail for allowing you to finesse a fish and be totally in contact with your lure or bait. Flipping a bail is clumsy when you are teasing a king, cobia, or dolphin, and sometimes the bail spring isn't strong enough to flip it over when you are ready to set the hook or work the bait. Also, a 706Z is just the right weight. Shimano Spheros's are nice for drift-lining off a boat and they have a good drag, but since they quit making the 12000 you can't get one you can fish with comfortably all day long. The 706Z also holds the perfect amount of line, 300 yards of 20 lb. test. That is spot-on for kingfishing or tarpon fishing. It also casts 25 lb. test well if you are targeting ling. But, I admit, I do like the sound of a fish burning line off that roller. Gets my adrenaline pumping.
Speaking of Jacks, I saw a few today!

I would freakin' love to diving underneath them when circled up. Cannot imagine how ultimately cool that would be to look up and see that from the bottom side.
Within this past week they've showed up out here, there's literally thousands. You can smell the fish just in the air around the platform. Kind of neat seeing them swim all in sync like they do.
its really good fishing when the reds come in with them also 10-15 hook ups is awesome!
That's an amazing view P&G. Thanks for sharing!
I wunder if they are in a spawning mode as they don't appear to be feeding?
What's the water temp out there?
David, I wondered the same thing. I've kind of periodically been watching them today. There's a large school of them that stay seperated from the rest. They're schooled up close together and basically swimming in circles.
The other thousands just kind of swim around together doing whatever. There's plenty of bait around but they're not really after it. Just chilling out I guess.
Seeing them in such numbers in such a small place as compared to the entire Gulf certainly adds some perspective.....
Hey Greg, I blew up Sam's pic and...........is that you swimmin' with the fishes?

Just talked to my brother in law, he works about 40miles from me in about 175ft of H2O and he said they're the same way over there.
