Thread: Grand Slam of Pier Fishing

I am sure I am not the first one to think of this but I did some research and other than a "trash fish" slam I did not see much about it. What would you consider to be the Grand Slam of Pier Fishing? I would vote landing a oversized Redfish, King Mackerel, Cobia, Tarpon and Jack Cravelle. I think those are the largest, hardest fighting fish that everyone has a pretty reasonable chance to catch. I know I would love to complete this slam. I know the Jack is considered a trash fish but I don't care, that is one of the most fun fish to catch ever. I know you have to have a tag to get a tarpon but I still think that is a reasonable fish to include in a list like this. Am I forgetting anything? Have you completed the slam? What fish are you missing?

I have on ever LANDED a really big Red, I have hooked a King and a Jack but I have never got them over the rail. I have caught undersized Cobia but not a keeper. Never even sniffed a Tarpon but sure hope to do so some day.

King, Spanish, Flounder, Red, Pomp, Speck and Cobia... Pick three.

One evening-night last April I managed a 17" pompano, a 17" flounder, a 12lb redfish and 6 huge specs along with several 16"-18" specs that were released. I have heard this called and inshore slam. I could also count a couple of whiting and hardhead cats but they probably don't count. All were caught on J&M's finest live shrimp from the pier house out to the bar. By far the best night I had ever spent at the pier.

For inshore slam I've always heard redfish, flounder, speck.

For the pier, I Probably wouldn't count tarpon as they are not commonly targeted, and when they are it's still unlikely they are caught. Plus not many people buy the tags to get them up on the pier.

King, cobia, and redfish/speck would be my ideal day.

For fun, my "trash fish" slam would be sailcat, Jack, and ladyfish?

Yeah, Inshore Slam (around here) is Speckled Trout, Redfish(slot), and Flounder.

In the past for the pier we counted Ling, King and Spanish Mackerel as a "Pier Slam".
Jack Crevelle, Bull Redfish and Bonita (Little Tunny) was a "Fall Slam".
Pompano, Sheepshead and Cobia was a "Spring Slam".
Sheepshead, Whiting and Black or Red Drum (slot) was a "Winter Slam".
'Hardtail' (Blue Runner), 'Skipjack' (Ladyfish) and Jack Crevelle was a "Summer Slam"

Hardhead catfish, Pinfish and Remora was a "Garbage Can Slam" ;-)
But that has been 'nixed' because folkses is eating Pinfish and Remora now
Maybe we could replace those with Leatherjacket and Stargazer or something like that?
I don't think anyone has figured out how to eat those (yet ;-) LOL

IMHO though, one of the rarest is a "Kingfish Slam"!
'Whiting' (Gulf Kingfish), and both 'Ground Mullet' species (Southern and Northern Kingfish).
I've only done that 3 times at the GSPPier.

Okay, I think I phrased this wrong. I can see how you could "hit" some grand slam of fishing in a single day. Thanks for all the stories and information and I would love to read more. I guess what I am thinking of is the Big Five of pier fishing. Like in Africa that would be to shoot a Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino and Cape Buffalo. It might take a lifetime of hunting and you would never achieve it. Again for me at the pier that would be King, Bull Red, Cobia, Jack and Tarpon. I want to touch and have my picture taken with each. One down and 4 to go for me.

Tarpon, Sailfish, Mahi, Blackfin Tuna and Red Snapper (in season and legal size).

Hooking the same other person with a Gotcha, Sabiki and a bubble rig in the same day would be the grand slam in this event category. I gotta get FinChaser out there so I can go to work--I've already been practicing on him.
