May Flounder?

What is the best way to surf fish for flounder in May?

Live small minnows on a Carolina rig is how I catch flounder.
But fishing around structure is usually much more productive vs. surf. I've caught maybe 2 in the surf in the last 20 years.
You might hit it lucky but its not normally the most productive place to catch them.

You can cover more bottom area faster using a 3" Gulp Shrimp on a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce jighead.
Always a chance for other fish as well...

I fish Bull minnows on different Bucktail jigs or, like Pier said fish a gulp shrimp or minnows on a jig if your covering lots of ground.

I agree with Carl I never have much luck in the surf. Fish the canals, little lagoon, bay side on Fort Morgan around structures. The bite should be picking up here in a couple weeks. They are busy gettin busy right now if ya know what mean:congratulatory:

The surf is usually tough fishing for flounder imo. Try the lagoon instead, look for back swirling eddies and slight tidal changes. They'll usually get close to drop offs. 3" paddle tail or gulp baits do work. Cast net finger mullet on heavier split shot when the tide is slack will fill your cooler if the flounder are around.

Very early morning walk the beach and cast ahead and parallel to shore (or back side of a bar) with lures mentioned. Flounder are ambush feeders and you must pull the lure/bait over their noses, although they will track a lure. The John Skinner U-tube videos have a couple on beach flounder from the Northeast but beaches here have less clear structure.

What ever bait or lure you decide to use do not quit on your presentation just because you are getting close to shore. Keep working it to the foam at the edge of the surf you will be surprised how many you catch in less than a foot of water. I like an quarter oz. jig head with a Matrix shad unless the current is strong then a 3/8.
